i wanted to go. wanted to say “if you were here” and if you were i’d keep the moment still rushing back to page forty-five where you kept your bookmark, and where i kept my heart— but there’s a girl underwater, and she looks like me star-laced, fabulous, and proud, dancing while she skims the sea, toes tipped forward in a fury-high grace— or perhaps a dim repose, curling her feet at your absence in spaces where she can cover her heart with its small black shield, the hours heavy with water, a faucet full of shame. and when she hits the back door it bursts the faces come undone and the smiles come unlaced, the circles that we go in resume their centrifugal motion— and you know, i’d try to stop mechanics if i weren’t so far away and i wanted to say what i’d do if you were here if you could stay, wrapped in the palette of my memory. and not only that, but a little more— if i could feel the electricity of your kiss at any time i wished, i’d never go, not past the pages between your heart and mine. |
