Drawers and Thoughts of a Daughter I would go again in to my mother’s drawers where her scent lingers on aged scarves I never liked but which she used, and on her, they looked good. I would finger her jewelry from the ‘40s and 50’s; she didn’t have much jewelry beyond those dates, and the pieces were so heavy. I would look at the cards she saved, and recall the day and why I sent them, just to feel me smile again. I would read the letters I wrote and hope they made her smile or laugh and never cry. Although they probably did. I would go once more to her bed, stroke her pillow where she last laid her head and wonder of her thoughts. I would breathe her pillow in. I would talk to her about my thoughts of getting older, on subjects we didn’t have a chance to discuss or cuss. I would acknowledge her successes in life and of the difference of us as wives even though we were mother and daughter. I have many good friends, here and beyond and in my mother’s absence they share guidance and concern but they are not my mother. Perhaps her words would be the same as theirs, but it would be her voice. And her scent. I miss you, Mom. In memory of Jacqueline S. Givens Rilling 1931 - 1992 10 February, 2000 ©KRJ |

This was very special. I sometimes go here too. Thanks for the tears. "The poet is the priest of the invisible." |

Oh gosh, this brought me to tears! My mother and I never get along, but I can't imagine living without her. Thanks for reminding me of what I have. "Men judge generally more by the eye than by the hand, for everyone can see and few can feel."-Machiavelli |

Sunshine, Your post about your mother made me decide to repost the poem I wrote about my own mother who passed away. I hope that you will read it. It's called "I Hid Her Pictures." Again, hugs to you this evening. Michael Proust- |

JM...my friend...I miss her most when I catch a whiff of "fresh"....go, and hug.... Melybee...sometimes she was hard to fathom...today I know she was only trying to protect all...amazing what we learn...thank you my 'bee... Martie...."of course" you do....we climb trees, don't we?.... Coyote....it is OK to go "there" often....for even in our memories, they shape our lives of today.... Hey my Bug....go hug your Mom...and then please, oh please, give her one more, from your friend....for me.... my Auguste Michael....I see, Sir, both notes, and be assured I will most assuredly see yours....hearts are touching.... Marge....isn't it so very specially fascinating to have certain memories return, again, and again...and don't they most usually always become the best of the best.... thank you all for letting me relive a most marvelous woman....for all of her faults...as we have all of ours....she shines on in my heart....most specially...thank you for letting me....be me..... |
