2167

The year is 2167
A grandma is doing her best to explain
That not all animals roam free now
Her grandchildren listen, trying not to complain

“ But why”? They ask
The grandmother can only sigh
“People, and their selfishness
For it was they, who told the lie”

Where ample forests once stood
Now, an old abandoned shopping mall
She remembers the mature trees
That once stood proud and tall

Beaver, wolves and white-tailed deer
Now only seen in zoos
Construction of new highways and houses
Drove them out two by two

She tells of once hand feeding squirrels
The children giggle with delight
How they wish they could have seen that
Never had the pleasure of such a sight

We take for granted the paths that we walk
But one day, you just never know
Beauty of today, gone recklessly tomorrow
As human beings…how could we have sunk so low?

There is ALWAYS hope as long as just one person carries the torch.   Thank you James for bringing this important issue to our attention again this year and for the challenge.

It is a blessing to have wings for words, and passion in pen

You know, one of the things that I missed was reading your work.

This is excellent, and indeed brings to light the things that we'll all miss if they're gone.

glad you reposted... not much being said about Earth Day this year in the media..
not like last year..
maybe now that Easter and Tax Day is over it will get some attention.

In another life...I know I loved you then
Lightning strikes twice...we're destined again.
We dont have to make promises...we were always meant to be

Marina, somehow I don't remember this piece. But you know my memory.... acid rain kill brain cells.
Great piece.
