THE ADDICTS

The reality would appear to be
That there is a painful joy,
Within various addictions,
Temptations that haunt,
And create havoc in lives,
Fraught with
Self-inflicted stress.
Affected, also,
Innocent bystanders,
Family members,
People who care.
The addicts pathway
Of self-destruction,
Gives dignity to no one.
Addictions can be small
Or large, it doesn’t matter,
The worst enemy
Of the addict,
Is the addict them self.
Emotions are complex,
The voids in lives,
Real and imagined, are many.
Addicts are without doubt,
Oft-times immature
Yet old beyond their years.
They sit, straddling the fence
Of despair and rejection.
Encasing themselves
Within the compounds
Of a self-made hell.

They have grown unworthy
Of who they are.
They treat themselves shamefully,
Without honor or respect.
They look in the mirror and see
What they don’t want to see,
Themselves.
So many addicts,
So many different addictions.
Lost innocence, all on the fast track
To reach the bottom of where
They don‘t want to be.

Yet, for many of the addicted,
In spite of a spiraling,
Downward climb
Of self-imposed loneliness,
On reaching the bottom
They find that they are not alone.

They can find fellowship and council.
Caring, understanding warm souls
And kindred hearts.
Eager hands willing to pull them
Once more towards the top
Of where they rightfully belong.
They can start to regain that
Which they thought
Was lost to them forever.
They realize a healthy growth
Towards a better future.
They are on an incredible journey
Of self-discovery, and awareness,
Looking upwards and forward.
Regaining strength and hope that
Their ongoing journey means
Not having to look back.
They are on a road to recovery,
A road that is long
And, regrettably, never-ending,
But filled with fellow travelers
It’s a road not trodden in loneliness
A way filled with encouragement
And hope.

RECOVERY
AND ITS ATTRIBUTES
ARE A WITHOUT A DOUBT
A BLESSED GIFT FOR THE ADDICTS.
IN ALL HONESTY ONE MUST PERCEIVE THAT,
IN SOME WAY OR OTHER WE ARE ALL - ADDICTED

Happiness comes from kindness.
Happiness cannot come from hatred or anger.

This is a poem that elicited many emotions in me.  I think I will put it in my library for that reason.  However, I believe your grammar needs some work.

Thanks for sharing.

"If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh"

Thank you. You are also possibly right about my grammar, never did get the hang of it properly.

I love it.  (grammar and all)

Though I am a bit unconventional, and a wee bit new here.
