THE CASTLE The building is run down, Dilapidated, old, It stands alone On one side of The litter-scattered street. Graffiti is crudely spray painted On the walls, Shouting obscenities, Advertising the coarseness Of the neighborhood. Poverty has taken a hold Like a festering sore, Unable to heal or be healed. A non-working neon door sign Shows barely Behind shattered glass. It spells out the word ‘MISSION’ Giving hope to many, And yet how inadequate, The wording on the sign. Dishing up bowls of steaming soup With sandwiches, Hot coffee or tea The building becomes a restaurant. Supplying cots, pillows and blankets To those in need of a place to rest, It becomes a hotel. It serves as a public washroom, The stained toilet bowls And crackled washbasins Cleaned twice daily, Smelling strongly of antiseptic, Are made available to all. It is a thrift shop, A used clothing store. It is a very adequate nursery For children Of those out seeking Gainful employment. It is a church, A place of worship, The altar is a crude table With a poorly, Yet lovingly made Wooden cross. All denominations Are serviced here. The seating - donated, Is a mixed array Of mismatched chairs, Old sofas and benches. Donated also is the television With its fading color And wavy images. The transient, The derelict and needy Do not care That this is not the Ritz. The 'MISSION' is important, To them, their little bit of heaven. It is a refuge, An oasis of care For the uncared for, A home for the homeless, THEIR CASTLE. Truths, Lies and Imagination, |

it is such a shame that there are so many homeless people living in the shelters and on the streets in the USA,and all the government is worried about is feeding other countries.I loved it as usual! |
