I hate his need,
he grasps for books
as though they were lovers,
moving shells.

I hate his need,
did you see his eyes,
stale frail pacts,
starting conversations?

I hate his need,
he swallows distance,
beating back empty,
waiting to go.

He hates his need,
every word is an arrow.
He points at my hollow.
I hate him and follow.

   Not to be?

There was this annoying man at my poetry reading. One of those people who insinuate themselves into your personal space and won't leave you alone, even though you're not giving eye contact and are barely answering them above a murmur.

At one point I got up and bought a poetry book, sat back down and started to read it, and then he asks me if he can look at it. He was whispering loudly to me as the reading was happening in front of us, and gesturing. So I gave it to him so he'd shut up.

I hate people like that. I hate that need. And I hate that I gave him the book even for a moment.

Anyway, this poem could also be about large political movements gone awry, or, human nature in general?

I love you, Lori.

cool! bitterness is a good motivator at times and helps us to point out more than the simple flaw... this is tight and concise... this is good...

Thanks. I dunno, I found this more angry than bitter -- and, luckily, the poem erased whatever anger I had.

Now I have to work on a poem about a girl in leather cryin' at the bar. Three poems in one day. Four, if you include adult. I'm insane.

(chuckling) yeah anger and bitterness are often very close and I can see this as more angry than bitter without any stretch.

4 poems huh... I think the most I ever did in one day ( complete poems that is) is probably 8. I seem to write like a madman if given the right stimuli...and if bored with my views or ideas....can go months without writing at all... now.... you didn't qualify the number of poems that had to be good out of the number written in a day...in my case it was 0... ( laughing)

Ah. One time I relegated myself to 35 haikus in one hour.

Let's just say ...
the number was a success.

And that was the only success.

NOW you're a madman!

yes..a madman... perhaps touched inmy old age by palsy that inspires me to hit the wrong button repeatedly as my hands shake
( laughing)

35 in an hour.. big stretch. I can't say I have ever attempted to try that. Might be interesting though I fear it would end up as variations on a theme for me as opposed to unique poems.

It was pretty much an exercise in arrogance.

None of the haiku have survived --
they were all uniformly awful.

And it started out as a scatter-shot collection, then suddenly, veered into T-minus-10, T-minus-9, T-minus-8 junk. I actually wrote haiku about completing my arbitrary goal!!!

Man, I was awful.

LMAO...
perhaps when we challenge the intellect too much in artistic pursuits we become slaves to the accomplishment rather than staying true to the art form itself..

If winter sits high
on tree tops
glistening the morning rays
as they in sluggish rise
make their way from heaven
to our hearts
perhaps the blanket shared
was only a dream

And NOW? Back to our feature presentation.

I can think of so many ways this could apply--but actually thought it was about an alter-ego! *gasp*

I really DID love this--as I am a fan of Dorothy Parker's "HATE" poetry series...

y'should check that out sometime. It's wonderful loathing.

okay, now you two may carry on!

Sen,
YOU should check out
(and purchase)
Poetry Speaks.

It's $50 bucks, sure,
but it includes three audio CDs
of poets reading,
including Parker
(and Tennyson,
and Stein,
and Frost,
and -- arguably -- Whitman)

THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK RIGHT NOW!
The best part?
The book also includes a range of poems
that aren't read, but are there
for your perusal.

Sorry.
Oh, um, shouldn't I be doing work today?
Oh, right.
NO ONE WANTS TO HELP ME FIX THE ETHERNET CONNECTION ON MY COMPUTER!

Grr.

Exeunt.

what's wrong with your ethernet? wrong IP entered or you got protocol issues? If your ethernet is not working...you must be on a dial up.... now that is a cruelty one should not be subjected to ( thinking about my home connections)

Well, it might not be ethernet,
but the office claims that as the name.

Anyway, I'm supposed to be writing up product and press releases right now --
but I can't! I can connect to the net,
but not the server.

And i'm the ONLY ONE in the office with this problem.

The other problem is,
I'm an editorial assistant,
so my problems, sadly,
aren't big problems compared to some.

But still.

This means tomorrow is crunch time.
And not the delicious Nestle variety!

Well the ethernet card allows you to connect to the server and to the internet, if your company is running everything across a LAN ( local area network). If you can connect to the internet through the LAN, but not the server, then you could have a passowrd login issue that will cause it to fail. Might try rebooting the computer, then depending on how your network is set up, try navigating to the server in question, and see if it lets you in. Bottom line, unless something has changed on your computer you work with ( you have changed setting in the control panel or set up some software that defaults to certain protocols used to talk to other servers and did so automatically) and you are connecting to the internet through a LAN connection the issue is most likely not with your computer but the settings themselves or the server's. Many companies set passowrds that log you on to a server to expire after a number of days or months and force you to set a new one. You haven't ignored any prompts telling you your password has expired have you?

Thanks for the troubleshoot, Ron. I'm gonna call support in Troy, Mich.

The whole office went dead at middle of last week, but everyone else came back on, except me.

It's sometime configured wrong with this computer, I'm sure of it. The same thing happened when I first started here in June.

Unbelievable.

Again, thanks for your know-how.

What a treat to see you responding to a poem of mine, brian. Thanks for the chuckle, too.

Much appreciated!
