Leaf

My eyes never leave your face,
I know the words you'll say today,
before they leave your mouth,
before they cross the miles,
between us and land on me,
like leaden weights,
fall on me,
like bluestone blocks,
and tear the smile from my life.

I see a tree behind you,
from the corner of my eye,
all the brittle leaves are blown away and gone,
but one.
You reach a hand to me,
and place your fingers on my shoulder,
because killing my smile must hurt,
and you're trying to ease the death of me,
with contact.

The words of farewell,
tumble from your lips,
I'm surprised,
they bare no weight as they land on me,
just the coldest touch,
the chill of no forgiveness,
the frost no more chances,
and ice forms in my heart.

My eyes flick to the tree once more,
winter wind tickles the final leaf,
and it quivers gently,
so frail,
so very frail,
its hold to reality.

You lean towards me,
and the scent of you,
brings tears unbidden to my eyes,
you press your lips to mine,
and taste my sadness as it gathers on your mouth.

The kiss ends,
as we end,
the leaf succumbs to finality,
you turn away from me and head for your car.

Entranced I watch the leaf fall,
tumble end over end,
no balance now,
no place anymore,
it is but chaff on the breeze.

It lands in your hair,
as you leave me behind,
I hope it stays with you,
as I stayed with you,
for just a little while.
