"Andover" the ancient buildings in timeless state seem to show no outward decay across the yards and years where strolled so many mundane scholars such as I no mover or shaker rubbing elbows with the new elite in the prime of their obscurity and what of those names of fame and fortune? do you know me now? "nay, no more than would any soul yet know me" that shy poor country boy who struggled so with math memorizing Shakespeare with an ease of tongue writing that lame story of an eagle's wing in Sam Phil Hall to Mr. Hawes profiling Ben Franklin out of admiration for invention as you profiled Malcolm X inventing admiration for your power politik disgracefully undressed in Brooks Brothers fraudulence conjugating a Latin verb for Mr. K: amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatus, amaverunt long before I experienced I experienced the longing desperately desiring the sirens of Abbott matriculating among us in miniskirted taughtness fruitlessly awakening the insurgent flesh of fantasy "coed boarding campus" seems strangely Orwellian whatever will they do to temper age with no youthful memories of carnal deprivation? yet in my age I am still poor while Ben Franklin comes to you daily a hundred fold behold on their cyberian page a job posting: "groundskeeper" no degree required I wonder if a not quite ex-alumnus need apply? Whoa. I'm still trying to understand all of this, but it's a great poem none the less. Such a sea of images! Definitely one that ought to reside in my library! "If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh" |
