The heart of you

0 posted 2002-03-11 03:59 PM

This is the mask that I must wear.
It's not that I'm too weak to take it off,
It's the fact that obligation has forced me
To wear it.
Were I to remove this mask,
What would be revealed?
Quite possibly, nothing that you don't already
Think that you know.

You read the words, looking,
Looking for that phrase, that line that you think
Speaks of undying love.
When, in fact,
It is our love that has died.
But yet, you refuse to still see it.
And so, here I am, still on that string,
Behind this mask,
Trying so hard to find those scissors.

I'm back now, here to tell you
What it is you know to be true.
Yes, it's me.
Yes, it's her.
And while our feelings are still new,
They are there.
We both tried very hard to walk away from them,
To fulfill our obligations to both of you.
But, in the end,
We both wound up putting on the mask
Because it's not our desire to hurt either of you,
But, we know that we will
Because, it always happens.
Someone always gets hurt.

We did try to tell you we weren't happy,
Tried to tell you what was in our hearts.
But, you just wouldn't listen.
Even when we lashed out, at times, painfully
At those things that got in the way
Of your understanding.

And so, here we are again,
Behind our masks,
Trying to get both of you to understand
That it's over.
While both of us try not to lose one another
To our
Obligations.

Hello there, my friend. I certainly hate to think of what brings you to this side of the forums.

This seems to be a very real story you tell. Unfortunately, its probably a truth of lots of people.

I can see the frustration in this.

Of that tongue’s uttering, yet I know the sound:" "Romeo and Juliet"

You had the answer in your poem actually - someone always gets hurt.  What kind of an obligation could possibly hold back people in love?  Loved your poem.

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.

Wow.... quite the dilemma... excellently put...  I believe strongly in fulfilling obligations, so I can see how this would tear at you....  I know  about masks, as well.  great poem.

Due to circumstances beyond your control, you are master of your fate and captain of your soul.

Time to shed that mask, don't you think?

I enjoyed this.

Perhaps you are right dear friend, it has been too long.  Far too long.

Thank you.
