Door To Oblivion So I looked around and found down deep inside me that which had been beaten down so many times, found the essence of my soul cowardly hiding just before the door to oblivion, found a spark, fanned it to a flame, a roaming malevolence that defied defiance, that swore alligence to the devil himself rather than be beaten insensible again. So I looked around from high above all that would suck the essence from my life, and pounded to the ground those that threatened and aligned myself with perceptions ugly face; I became those who whored themselves to the beast that feeds on the misery of others. I looked around again, and there you stood, as you always had. with the same enigmatic smile you always wore through all the abuse, the browbeating, the terrible things I'd accuse you of, while I, Satans whore, considered myself so much more than you. And I looked at the ground beneath your feet, saw the bloody stains of my sins and cried for the terrible things I'd done to you. I looked around again, saw you smile, open your arms, invite me in… and I knew with you I'd never be the same again. So I closed my eyes and slept for the first time since I don't know when, in the arms of the Father and the Son, and the knowledge that I'd never be alone, again. w. james beard, jr. © June 2001 |
