***If you don't know, El Dorado is the mythical city of gold that the Spainards thought was in South America.*** So young, so full of life I was When he took me in his arms He had to say goodbye then He was going to El Dorado The old city of lore Full of gold and love… Our love would flourish there, he said As soon as he found it, he would send for me Day floated by, then months and years Without a word from him I decided, then, to find El Dorado There were many mountains to climb I climbed them all With the vision of a city of gold With the vision of my golden lover Always in my eyes As I reached each summit Hoping to see gold gleaming All I saw were more mountains Which I took on Higher Was Summit Each As My Spirit Sunk Lower Each Day One summit, I saw an old woman Although she was blinded, I asked “Old woman, where is the city of gold? Where is this land of perfect love and golden dreams? Where is El Dorado?” She looked at me with sightless eyes Though she saw much more than I She smiled, then laughed and cackled and said “There is no El Dorado!” I refused to believe the old woman’s words I climb the mountains in a frenzy Thinking that it must be just beyond the horizon But with each summit I climb All I see are more mountains to conquer And no secret city of gold I sink to my knees Feeling the snow below them Instead of the glimmer of gold Feeling the cold wind Instead of my lover’s arms Realizing the unbelievable Instead of the relief of reaching the goal There is no perfect human love There is no golden dream There is no earth-bound city of gold... There is no El Dorado < !signature--> "Where there is great love there are always miracles" -Cather "Love heals everything, and love is all there is"- Zukav [This message has been edited by LoveBug (edited 01-20-2001).] |

Kinda reminds me of the country song "There is no Arizona"... I think that's what it's called. Those kinds of stories/poems/songs always get to me. *sniff* ~The hardest thing is watching the one you love... love someone else.~ |

LoveBug~ The hills of El Dorada is a nifty metaphor ! I like your inspiration for this piece. Nicely done. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Sharon- I hope you always keep your El Dorado Girls- Thank you for your kind compliment Poetic- Thanks! Can't say that I've heard that song. Not much into country! Marge- This one just wouldn't leave me alone, so I had to write it. Thanks JM- Your opinion means a lot to me. Thanks for replying. This one kind of puts me in the mind of that new country song "There Is No Arizona" Sometimes we want what doesn't exist and it's hard to tell ourselves otherwise...not an easy place to be ~ Ruth www.angelfire.com/pa/OriginalMinds/index.html |

Hehe, you may not know the song, but at least Hoot Owl here knows of it. I don't listen to much country but because I live in a very small, boone dock town, I hear it. It's a very sad song... ~The hardest thing is watching the one you love... love someone else.~ |

(sigh) Oh, but dear, we all have the magic of El Dorado deep inside our hearts, within a heart of gold. If you nurture it, it will forever shimmer with greatness. Love is like El Dorado. Excellent poem, my friend, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton |

Love Bug...What a story you have written here...I was thinking I'd write someting, using the country song, "There is no Arizona" as a guide, and yes, there is no El Dorado either, just you and the ground you walk on...and I think that is probably a lovely place. |

This was a wonderful piece to rest my eyes on and the inspiration was tremendous. I loved the format you penned and of course it goes without saying the imagery was superb. Loved it completely. FYI-The song "There Is No Arizona" is by a country artist by the name of Jamie O'Neil and it is on her first and only album.(as far as I know it to be) If you get CMT where you live just turn it on and you will see the video and believe me, it is well worth seeing and listening to. Hi Lovebug, Truly an inspired writing, and well done. But there is an El Dorado, I believe that it is in our heart. BC |
