On Final Breath I Held His Hand |

On Final Breath I Held His Hand Standing beside the hospital bed, I looked down on his pathetic form. The steady drip, drip of IV's. Needles piercing bruised bruises. Monitors counting breaths and heartbeats. The sickly sweet odor. Leaning forward, I kissed his forehead, then combed the knots from his dirty red hair. I dipped a paper napkin in a glass of water and washed his stubbled face. Breathing shallow and coming in gurgling sighs, I took his hand. White bone showing throw tissue thin skin. I half expected his hand to tightly grip mine as he left on final breath. Too frail, I tightly gripped his own instead and said goodbye. Proust- |

Michael--It is so difficult to see the fraility of death in goodbye. You have written its truth here. |

Michael- The imagery in your words made it seem as if I were there too. Sad that some endings are like this. I wish you comfort and inner peace, my friend. Kate Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood. |

Auguste, I can smell the room and hear the machines and wish it could be different. You have held the hand that many of us have held. But you made it feel like it was a gift to be able to be there. Thank you and hugs, ME |

A sigh and a look towards the heavens is what this inspires. Truly touching. CD |
