The silence you brought,
As you shut the door,
Shook my very foundation.

I have memories imprisoned
As images on film;
Messages scorched on wood;
Tattoos faded with time:
They haunt me and make what
Has happened seem so surreal.

And now, as I walk
The rooms that made our home;
Spaces that captured our shared life:
A life I’d always thought
And never doubted, was lived
So contently?

I enter the kitchen,
Stocked with precious produce,
And it is here I see the recipe
That makes up you and I;
The completed dish was served
‘The Couple’?

I enter the dining room,
The place we shared
The fruits of all our labour;
Nourished by all we partook,
And having dined on such cuisine,
Our relationship matured?

I enter the living room,
The place of entertainment and laughter;
It was here we escaped
Life’s oppressive deadlines and trails
And rested in one another’s arms,
In mutual affection?

I enter the bedroom
Where all our intimacy was laid bare.
Here, I gave you me;
My body, mind, and spirit;
All that I am was entrusted to you,
My trustworthy companion?

Now you have closed
What was always an open door;
For you that door was my heart!

reminds me of when i installed the deadbolt..... but the good news is, someone later found out how to unlock it...

a sad read of reminisce and the ache accompanying change which sometimes hits us like a bomb, unexpectedly....

well done.

Hi Paula,

Thanks for reading the poem.

It was a friends experience that led me to write the poem; I think she's open to a freshly cut key unlocking the 'door'.

Cheers
Jon
