I loved you through the slender years When your body was tight and strong And women turned on the street To watch you walk past. I loved you through the learning years When things started to go soft And less often did I run my fingers Through your thinning hair. I loved you through the take for granted years When we let things slide away And making love was a duty Not a pleasure anymore. I love you now in the lateness of life And I want so much to say You are all I've ever loved my dear Even when I left the words unsaid. I love you in your flannel shirts With the nights stubble upon your cheeks And tasting of morning coffee And the pastry I pretend not to see. I love you sweetheart, more each day Although it took years to realize Its not that young strong body that I seek But the man I see in your tender eyes. |

Ah Paula you've said it so well here....there's so much to it and true love goes through so many stages...it's the appreciation of all those stages with love that makes a love last...I'm sure glad I didn't miss this one......love to ya Eric ....ethome The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges. |
