The Mirror in the Closet

This day is full of shadows,
they slant across his lap
darkening the crease and fold,
lingering on his ankle,
turning its golden, brown.

His surface slants, then bends
and slithers into the corner
where he has hidden his dense feeling,
waiting as it always does
for evening,

evening, when all things are equal
and darkness opens the closet.

Then, he pulls out a box of memory,
a box
without the grace to collect dust.

It is then that he weeps
into the questions
that form and reform his days now,
and he takes them up one by one
and examines their black and white stillness
looking for an answer,
one that will ease him away from the past
and take him, blissfully
into his last years.

What he doesn’t see
is the mirror behind him,
where the answer waits.

Oh Martie....the sights, the sounds, of those who have lived lives without those who love them....and while we await their disclosure....we lose so much...

heartstrings my friend....hearts string....

so much definition of the setting and the character written in so few perfect chosen words...
this reminded me of a Norman Rockwell painting.
excellent Martie

Wonderful job Martie...you write with such depth yet so easy to read!

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.
