Goodbye

The day opens still,
unafraid
and closer than most.
Fog rises soft,
its ghost floats
long and low
over the stones,
above the grasses
of the shore's
sinewy slope.

We have known
of this day,
unfolded
its moments often.
It is ours,
alone.

We touch and sigh,
tender lovers,
speak hushed,
grateful words,
look hard into
one another's eyes
and absorb the
climbing light
of our last
shadowbox sky.

Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau

Sunshine, Kit, thanks to you both. It is just a memory now, but one that, to my way of thinking, warranted a few thought-about lines. Thank you for reading.

Ooh... I like.
The last stanza especially. "Our last shadowbox sky." That is simply excellent.

Very nice work indeed! I really like this!

"look hard into
one another's eyes
and absorb the
climbing light
of our last
shadowbox sky."

Great mood and setting!

Claire, this is wonderful. Please don't ever thank me for reading your work, it's I who needs to thank YOU.

Hello, everyone, and thank you all for reading my poem. Please forgive me for not being able to "be here" as much as I would like, but I am trying to visit as I find the opportunity. Take care all. (o:

Allan, thank you for your simply excellent response! How do you make those little green faces?? (o:

ethome, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the mood of this piece. It was, alas, bittersweet. (o:

Sven, I couldn't agree more. Thank you, always, for reading and letting me know. (o:

Poet deVine, you possess charm just as lovely as your name. Thank you, thank you, thank you! (so there!) (o:

Wilfred, such sweet words from you...thank you. Seems to me you do just fine, my friend. (o:

JLR, I'm glad. Thank you so much. (o:

Joyce, yes, I agree. If we were to write all our memories in verse, why, we'd never again know the misery of writer's block! Thanks very much for reading and letting me know you enjoyed my poem. (o:

"and absorb the
climbing light
of our last
shadowbox sky." --once again, you leave me breathless with words and images such as this...how someone can be so unique with phrasing and imagery is beyond me...and yet you do it time after time. Gorgeous, sorrow-filled work, Claire. It was truly a pleasure to read, as always.
