Afraid to Soar

by Michael Auguste

Afraid to soar, so settled we,
in these tired lives that do not grow.
In fear we might upset the norm.
Unsure just where our lives may go.

We love to dream but do not act
upon a future that's not clear.
How dull to never chase a dream.
Cannot we even spare a year?

If you should fail, it can be said,
you chanced to dream like men of old
and set your sails on unknown shores.
Bow cutting waters dark and cold.

Stagnation, ugly, should not win,
when books you never sought to read.
Since childhood, tv's been your friend.
I want to plant in you a seed.

Like Jack, I hope that you will climb
and touch the stars before too late.
To learn of things you didn't know.
There isn't time for you to wait.

Please seek these dreams before they're gone
and soar on wings of cherished hope.
Then write the words for your life's song.
With obstacles, I know you'll cope.

For sunsets border on the mind
and new horizons still to see.
Though unexplored these waters are,
it's up to us that they will be.

So raise your sails and hurry on.
The day is waning, sun's near set,
and dress yourself in warm attire.
This journey's cold and often wet.

And when you reach the stars you seek,
like firefly glitter in the night,
just onward push and do not rest,
Until at last your dreams see light.

I wonder how many times we allow our fears to chain us in our dull mediocrity, even while our hearts cry for more? *S* This is beautiful advice... well done!

This is a fine poem you have penned.

I liked this so much. Change is hard for most people and we often aren't willing to break away from the pattern we've woven for ourselves. I know from experience how wonderful it is to follow a dream.......even though it didn't turn out exactly as I envisioned. I wouldn't have missed the experience for anything!

Oh, this had a perfect flow. It was a breeze to read, and the message was still incredibly clear.
Very good job.
