Sonnet to a Caterpillar

A glowing halo round a silver moon
Is certainty a snowstorm’s on it’s way
In Punxsutawny revelers assume
A groundhog shows if winter’s here to stay

The woolly caterpillar knows for sure
If winter will be mild or snowy deep
The black bear’s hibernation tells us more
How far into the cave he falls asleep

But radar screens and satellites now reign
Archaic means of forecasting are done
They said the blizzard of the century came
But all we got that day was glaring sun

When meteorologists must take it back
It’s time to read the Farmer’s Almanac

I loved this---down here in New Orleans I think meteorologists have a pretty tough job--lol---we learned long ago to just listen and say "uh huh", and you learn to watch for the signs. If it's late summer and those dratted crows get quiet--I buy emergency supplies!!! lol..and thank you for the charming sonnet.

Liz, Serenity said it ~ this is charming. Wisdom is found in observing nature, to be sure. A lovely, clever sonnet, Liz. Thanks for it.

This is so true! For all their sophisticated equipment, the weathermen (or women) seldom seem to be able to predict what is going to happen on any given day. Those old signs in nature, are more accurate, I think.

I can't really relate to this..
Mostly because i live in minnesota
and well it always snows!
But I am sure it is the truth!

Yes,indeed tha time again. Beautifully expressed!

A quarter of a century must pass, for the writer to understand what and why he writes.

You made me smile here, Elizabeth. Very nicely written.

All the old tried and true weather forecasters are called 'old wives tales' now. I know though, when the wind blows and the leaves on the trees are showing their 'belly' we're going to get rain. Love this poem Liz!!!
