Compassion

Compassion is an inner feeling
That wakes the heart to respond
To the needs of others first.
Not everyone has the capacity
To give from the heart this way.

Compassion is not something one learns.
We may show compassion in troubled times
And still not have true compassion in our heart.
It is one thing to say we feel compassionate
And another to actually be able to show it.

Compassion is one of God's greatest gifts.
One either has compassion, or they don't.
It is not something learned from a book,
Or imitated by watching another person.
It's possible to have a better understanding
Of compassion when you've been the recipient.

Compassion has to come from the soul,
It's not a matter of just being kind.
It's an unselfish act of love for another.
When you are able to put someone else's needs
Ahead of your own and only want 'their good',
You've found the true meaning of compassion.
It's a feeling one knows only when experienced.

There is only one way to write so profoundly on a feeling that mankind so seldom extends, and that is if you possess that quality yourself...and you certainly must, as this is the purest definition of compassion I have ever read, and jsut a fantastic piece of poetry to define it. Kudos, Kate!

Thank you so much, Mysteria, this poem is one of my favorites because it defines the person I try my best to be each day with the people in my life. Hugs to you, Kate

Sweet compassion you have described. And I can't help but say I really like the T.S.Eliot quote you've chosen.

When speaking from the heart, one shines. And you most definitely do here.

After years of searching, I have found I am nothing more, nothing less...I am in truth Just A Woman after all.
