He knocks softly on the door I look up and motion him in As I smile at the smile I see He asks how I am I say all right thanks Asking how he is in return His reply says he is great Can’t argue with that He stands by me as we talk I get a phone call He can tell by my reaction It isn’t good news I feel his hand resting softly On my shoulder Trying to ease the tension He sees on my face Afterwards he asks gently If everything is okay I say I’m not sure yet He reassures me it’ll be fine I can do anything Then he says something That makes me laugh Which I am grateful for How does he know When I need to laugh Or what to say I’ll never know But I will always Be thankful for those times He tries to ease The burden I feel His ways are effortless Small meaningful gestures That mean more than I can ever say to him He makes me feel Like I am someone I know at least To him I am His shift is over Time for him to go I tell him Have a nice night He says he will Then tells me to take care As he leaves I watch him go Thinking how lucky I am To have him in my life As my friend At this time Is priceless Someday I will tell him What it means To have him there Poetry should surprise by fine excess...it should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance. -J.Keats |

Your thoughts are warming your heart, but your words would warm his soul...tell him! What a nicely worded acknowledgement of a very wonderful life where two can live in harmony and love. ~*~A poet is someone who reads more than they write ~*~ |

Beautiful! Gentle honesty, and it shines! To hold tomorrow we must first be willing to let go of yesterday. |

Lone Wolf - I have found a close friend is to be cherished, as they are few and far between. I have some friends, but only a few that I consider very close. BC |

Your feelings come through warm and clear in this written from the heart poem. I liked the way you set this up...by choosing not to include dialog between you two, it puts some distance between the reader and the action in the poem. But, I found this an effective way to show a certain amount of emotional distance between you and your friend...meaning that you want to tell him how you feel but put it off to someday in the future. I think the combination of this made this piece powerful in a subtle sort of way. Very enjoyable read! Jellybean King |

'How does he know when I need to laugh.' I love this line. These are the kinds of things 'real' friends know to do. I loved the pure simplicity of this poem, a really, 'feel good' read, I enjoyed so much. Kate Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood. T S Eliot |

Wynter . . . *s, thanks. JLR . . . I get the hint!! LOL. Mysteria . . . The time will come. We will see anyway. Thank you for reading. Mike . . . Thanks! dreamkeeper . . . Always honest! BC . . . True friends are a treasure and should be treated as such I think. They make life worthwhile with their presence. JK . . . Thank you, but I rarely write dialogue into any of my poems. Just not my style. No hidden meanings here, but thanks for the comments. Kathleen . . . YOU are a treaure, sweetheart. I'll be sure to take your advice. Kate . . . Thanks for reading. I am glad you enjoyed it. Poetry should surprise by fine excess...it should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance. -J.Keats |

From the way you wove this my friend...I'll bet he knows I loved the simple way this was done...by simple I don't mean easy...merely simple to follow and feel...like standing on the sidelines watching it all unfold in front of your eyes...love the way you weave~ |
