Winter Rose She was so soft, a rose about to bloom And opened silken petals to the glow Of morning sunbeams reaching through the gloom To kiss a crimson rose on fields of snow For summer turned to winter in her heart The night to day, and warmth to icy cold The woods of leafless trees in folds of bark Stood silently in stories yet untold She came from land of sun and lush of green From snow capped peeks and shores with sands of black Where sheep graze under palms on hills serene And Maori blood now flies the Union Jack She rode into the Blue Ridge winding hills She stepped into the life of Tennessee But deep within her dreams, she sought the thrill To step upon the Isle of Liberty Her footprints etched in Pennsylvania’s white Beneath bare trees still void of summer leaves But through it all the greatest of delight Were snowflake stars that landed on her sleeves What simple joys bring pleasure to her strife What depth of insight reaped by brilliant mind Then all the plain and intricate of life Are penned into the most exquisite lines A poetess went halfway round the world And opened petals to a whole new light As truth of life’s realities unfurled A red rose bloomed in silent fields of white Elizabeth Santos [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (edited 03-08-2001).] |

Many, many things to say about this extraordinary piece of poetry for just as extraordinary the writer as the recipient...Kamla will adore this AND it should be bookmarked for the next Voices book... but for now, it will have to reside in my library as one of your very best! |

Isn't the world sometimes a very beautiful place when those who have formed a bond can experience this! I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!! Kathleen Blake "When red-haired girls scamper like roses over the rain-green grass, and the sun drips honey." Laurie Lee |

This is stunning... Those of us not lucky enough to be on her route have enjoyed her visit vicariously... for at each stop comes the disclosure... she's even better in person than in poetry. *S* |

A poetess went halfway round the world And opened petals to a whole new light As truth of life’s realities unfurled A red rose bloomed in silent fields of white ===================== this is so wonderfully conceived how lovely and how very cool that Kam touched so many in the short time she was here. beautiful loving tribute to friendships discovered thru poetry. the gift of this special place jm Some find subtlety in strangers some find subtlety alone Your eyes, you see everything my eyes,I see its all together now and I know. ~candlebox~ |

Martie, I'm so glad you and Kamla met. I think you two are poetic twins in a way. Two of the greatest at free verse. Love you both Sunshine, I'm so glad you liked this. THanks for keeping it Elizabeth, THanks - I hope so Kathleen, THank you. WE do have a special bond, all of us. I don't think Kamla will see this, as her computer is down right now. But maybe she'll find it someday Lady in white, Thank you so much Wynter, Yes, she felt it, all right. It snowed when she was here, and luckily that blizzard just missed us,or she wouldn't have been able to leave!. But we took some pictures of her in the snow Sy, Thank you for the lovely words Bill, THank you for your kind comments Janet Marie, THank you, dear, I appreciate your sweet words Liz |

Dear Elizabeth: Whoever your friend is, she must be totally thrilled to have such a lovely poem written for her. What a special gift from friend to friend. I'm new to the site as of today, but I am enjoying every minute I've spent here because of work like yours. You are very gifted! Betty Lou Hebert |

LIZZY! I am so sorry I have missed this! I haven't had a lot of net access hon - I came home to find my flatmates had managed to get the phone cut off...and I haven't been going to Open while I am online... (Martie showed this to me - HUGS Martie..) AND WOW...this just gave me tears..and smiles. I am still pining you know Lizzy. I want to come 'home' - for it felt/feels like home - very badly. Finding it hard to get back into real life you know. Thankyou for this precious gift of words. I will always treasure them - and the memories. Hugs Your NZ daughter. Kamla. ...and I have found a lifetime can be lived in one moment... |
