Stones On the Ground Virginia Salter Hopscotch, hopscotch, stones on the ground. Pigtails, ponytails, eyes of brown. ABC’s, 1-2-3’s music’s rhythms fly. We play at being children my friend and I. Down the road someone has a plan To take away our innocence with the back of a hand. Down another road someone’s feeling sore planning dastardly deeds behind the schoolroom door. We wanna hang by our knees and swing. We wanna laugh and play hear the school bell ring. We wanna make Valentines an’ give a little pinch when green is not sported on nary an inch. We wanna be little, and we wanna grow big not fall prey to someone who doesn’t give a fig. © March 7, 2001 |

Too many children have their innocence taken away. Very sad. You've expressed it well, Virginia. |

Virginia love, this is truly first class writing from you, absolutely excellent work. You have portrayed this very difficult subject with a degree of clarity that I really know I could never do. So back up to the top you go love Take care love as always Mushy Take back the hope you gave,- I claim Only a memory of the same Robert Browning |

Your last verse is a right that should be granted every child... and the sadness is overwhelming that such is not the case... Well done! |
