by Melton L. Culberth Fishing isn’t an easy life, it’s one of the hardest ways to live. I callus my hands and break my back, just to take what the sea gives. A beautiful sight is the sea at night, which can take your breath away. But the ocean in motion, if it took a notion, could be your death today. There’s lighting on the horizon and the stars fill the sky. The air is warm and crystal clear as the night passes by. Then the winds blow stronger, the waters rage, I swear I don’t want to die. And I find myself alone at sea with nowhere in which to hide. I’ve heard the stories of men that died, their lives taken by the sea, And wonder what the future holds, “Is death my destiny?” I think of my lady I left ashore and how will she pay the bills, And of my sons and daughters and how I never wrote a will. I turn to the Lord to hear my plea, “I want to keep my life." I pray, “If I’ve got to go, would You take care of my wife?” But I know the Lord has answered my prayer, for I can now see land, And mother nature has let me live to fish here once again. In memory of my dad, Raymond Culberth: Oct. 3rd, 1919 – Feb 8th, 2001 [This message has been edited by 2dalimit (edited 03-04-2001).] |

Oh, how true are your words!! This little bay we are on can be a beauty to behold and in a couple of hours be angry waves. Take care, pray and obey. I can "see" by your words. ME |

Melton: This is a beautiful tribute to the life of a fisherman, and a father. The sea holds such beauty, yet a human is just a grain of sand to its immensity. Enjoyed reading your poem! |

Mother_Earth, Thank you for reading. Yes, the sea can be friendly or angry. We must work with her. Martie, My father and I shrimped together for several years before he retired. We both respected the ocean. Thank you for reading. Marge, Thank you for your heartfelt response. Suthern, I wrote this poem when I was on the boat alone and lonely years and years ago. This is the first time I considered it worthy to post. Thank you for reading and I’m glad you enjoyed it. jellybeans and JLR, He was a good and honest man. Thanks for reading. I learned all I knew about the business from him and I am a better man because of him. Melton |
