A Lady of the Night

I forced my face in the odd of a place
That screamed to heaven of old southern lace.
They’re in a corner, a constant boarder,
A veteran smoker, drinker and mourner.

Perused my way and winked an old lash
Drew on her cigarette, blew an old ash.
Smiled in a manner of quizzical show
And pursed her lips like Greta Garbo.

I smiled at her dare and moved back my chair
Went to her table in gracious declare.
Offered my name and a drink as I stood
Nodded acceptance and a chair if I would.

Then we talked in a soft and easy way
Spoke of the menial things of the day.
But quickly it turned confession in part
With a drink, a puff and a curse from her heart.

She had beauty beneath the scars of her strife
With the savoir fair of a much better life.
Then told me a story so doomed and despaired
That I sat quite spellbound of all she declared.

But confessions to me are a sacred trust
Though they ring of the devils call and of lust.
I bowed to her sacrifice kissed her hand twice
And gave her my best and honest advice.

No giver or taker the goal of the soul
But only deals in the worth of the whole.

Listening to every heart

Sy, in the photo of the moment, I could hear the husky voice, giving up to the recipient all of the pain, in a quiet, anquished manner, as the man across from her could do nothing but listen...until the silence fell, and he could once again find his own voice to give solace...

thank you for adding to my library...

I dont know which is more impressive about this piece ...
the use of combining detailed imagery and story telling ...
or your gift of inner line rhyme that makes the cadence sing the story to us ...
(reading this aloud is a poetic pleasure)
or the subtle golden wisdom and soul from the poet that I read within the lines...

so very very cool poet sir ... so very.
outstanding show of your talent and grace me sweet Sy.
and you make it all look so easy.

and by the way...
you can "force your face ...
in any ole place" of mine ... anytime *L*
bring Randy ... I'll buy him a drink too
The Kool-aid is on me

treasure box bound

It's amazing
how you make your face just like a wall
how you take your heart and turn it off
how I turn my head and lose it all

beautiful Sy,

I remember some of my neighbors when I first moved here..much older than I, and I loved to sit on their porch or mine and hear the stories of their life...always amazed me how they managed to survive their struggles...now I wish some of them were still around to listen to mine and encourage me. thank you
