What a Mother Cannot Do To you, dear son, I offer love And blessings from the Lord above May God go with you on your way As you pursue a brighter day I’ve loved and nurtured you since birth And given you a sense of worth Within our principles we live But there are things I cannot give I cannot choose which path to take Or which decisions you should make I watch with pride the ways you grow But cannot pay the debts you owe In your elation I rejoice But only echoing your voice Beside your sorrow I can sit But you must bear the weight of it Whatever brings you inner peace I cannot question that belief A broken heart I cannot mend Nor can I choose your dearest friend I cannot judge the things you do For I am not the soul of you For every hardship that you bear My spirit is not full aware For all the things you’ve come to learn For all the glory you have earned You are the one who traveled far You are the one who grabbed a star I only led a child’s hand Those years you didn’t understand But somewhere in the dark of night Your young and eager wings took flight I‘ve given what was meant to give But it was you who learned to live Please know that from a mother's heart Love will abundantly impart Elizabeth Santos [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (edited 03-03-2001).] |

This sounds a bit like my "EmptiNesst"... It's wonderfully bittersweet watching them become what you've spent so many years striving for, isn't it, Liz?... This is a superb piece... |

Ah Yes Lady Santos....once on their own, we cannot rescue them from their choices, only give moral and loving support... well done! |

Wonderful words of wisdom Elizabeth.....eventually the mother has to let go and let the young man grow on his own. That's hard for some mothers but they all should read this poem it would help them. It's true there are so many things a mother can do for a son while he's growing but after that she must realize he's going to take on his own life of prupose, happiness and pain...I love the last part because I know it's so true...a mother's love never dies...bravo! to you for this write! The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges. |

I think that I might give this to my own mother. . . Thank you Liz. . . --------------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |
