Aurora Borealis

(Nearly fifty years ago, a comic strip appeared in many national newspapers: "Pogo" by Walt Kelly - about the antics of some swamp creatures but in reality a commentary on contemporary politics and society. It had great quality for me - as I still remember some of the pithy little verses. I replay a few lines below - as preamble to my own pathetic effort.) (I need the colorful text talents of some of my brethern here - without them - use your imagination )

How pierceful grows the hazy yon
How myrtle-petaled thou
For spring has sprung the cyclotron
How high browse thou brown cow

And

O roar a roar for Nora
Nora Alice in the night
For she has seen Aurora Borealis burning bright
A furor for our Nora
And applaud Aurora seen!
Where throughout the summer has our Borealis been?

.................................---Walt Kelly

Aurora Borealis

God and nature collaborate
In rare and wonderful ways
To smear a collage of colors
Across our skies some days

'Tis true for those in artic climes
The sight's less rare it's true
But they don't get our rainbows
Their blues not quite so blue

When people at art galleries
See abstract art and say
"This is not art, they threw the paint
It looks as mere child's play"

They only seem to recognize
The reality they know
Portraits in such detail
A photographer could show

I fear these souls have never seen
Aurora painted skies
Could they say as blithely
God indulged in child's play

And so we walked 'neath summer night
When nature unleashed her bounty
Everywhere we looked above
All about our county

No moon graced the heaven we saw
No stars shone midst those clouds
No fireworks blazed a holiday
Where we sat in shadows' shrouds

I saw it as an approval
That night I spoke my love
Celestial Borealis
A blessing from above

………………………---Wilfred Yeats

This is beautifully done - thanks for reminding us of what lies outside for us, if we only take the time to take a peek.

Elizabeth-
The sight is never the same - (from what I can tell) I've only seen them once, but from pictures -realize this is not something one ever forgets
Thank you

Martie-
the one time I saw the lights - I was about seven years old -
a warm summer night in Buffalo -
they silhouetted the tenement neighborhood houses
bringing beauty to the drab
Thank you

Karilea-
Once seen - never forgotton
Thank you

Janet Marie-
Madam/M'Lady - (since you've chosen formal "sir" - I will reply in kind - Thank you -
Please keep in mind your poetry impresses me as much or more than mine impresses you.
Thank you ~G~

Corinne-

Such beauty....definitely not pathetic at all. I'd like to see the Aurora Borealis someday...thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed the read.
