(Back in the 1600's Andrew Marvell wrote his most famous poem: ”To His Coy Mistress" found in most poetic treasuries.
It 'tickled ' my imagination in High School and still does all these years later- anyhow - I thought the 2nd millennium deserved an update)

Mistress seems a too quaint word
For the cool it sounds absurd
Even in our 'modern' times
Coyness doesn't ring the chimes

Today's woman, independent so
Can tease away -not lose the glow
That gives away her end intent
That tells which way her mind is bent

So I've got world enough and time
Tell her of her beauty - so sublime
Give years away that I might praise
Lips and form and wax my days

For patience be the lady’s virtue naught
Thus does she wish words from me wrought
Rather expressions of my need
Demonstrated by my deeds

Time enough for poetic rhyme
When she knows how hot my clime
Generated by her alone
How she turns my form to stone

Time enough later, tis done, did sate her
Words she’ll savor so much greater
In the calmness of surcease
As we share kisses in each crease

Time enough then to talk of coyness
When we’ve finished girl and boyness
Thus interruptions of the tease
When you bring me to my knees

The first duty of love is to listen.

Well written Bill I love the insight and the seasoned way you deliver this! As usual I enjoy your perspective.....ethome

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

I still think there is much to be said for the art of a man and woman's dance well before any true relationship...this pleases me very much...

I'm most appreciative Of your replies - I must confess I really had fun with this
I think we all benifit in our craft from reading the works of established poets
and sometimes attemting to emulate
Thank You all so much
