Paper Promises In attic’s dark and musty gloom With moondust settled in the room My thoughts are stirring in the haze Remembering the splendid days Letters stained with fallen tears Wrapped in ribbon through the years Lover’s vows upon a page Mellowed now with marks of age Carefully the bows untie Unleashing every written lie But still I seek to feel once more The love I lost forevermore Cricket’s chirp’s the only sound To break the hush of my surround A single lightbulb’s dimming cast Allows a moonbeam through the glass In shadows of the attic’s must I speak aloud the words of trust Unfolding each hand written note And fingering the love you wrote No need to read through teary eyes The words so firmly memorized Carved deep into my spirit’s well Where they still stir and ever dwell The moon has vanished in the dawn Just as the love that’s come and gone I hear the soft and muffled trill Of cooing dove upon the sill A soothing lovely peace he leaves While perched beneath the attic eaves I slowly peek to watch the pair Of loving doves in calmness there More faithful is the mourning dove Than paper promises of love Elizabeth Santos |

Elizabeth you have written another lovely poem. I have an attic like this, but no old love letters. But I can "see" you sitting there in the dust molts, reading and feeling the past. Wonderful. Hugs, ME |

Oh yes, I'm a sentimental fool for love letters.... "I walked beside the evening sea and dreamed a dream that could not be." George William Curtis |

Hoot, Thank you for the one word. It means a lot Sy, THank you for the 2 words. I know it means you like it, and that warms my heart Sunshine, It took me a while to figure out your message. That's a nice compliments Mother earth,, I have boxes of old letter in my attic and sometimes I go up there and read all afternoon. Most are from my grandmother and parents. It's like bringing out an old album. Thanks for the comments Melissa, Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you liked the poem Kathleen, You too? It is fun looking back sometimes. Thanks Liz |

Elizabeth~ I felt as though you had slipped into the attic of my mind with this one. I have EVERY card, note, letter, photograph and poem that I've ever been given, since I was nine years old. I will always, always thank my dear mother for teaching me to be a nostalgic pack-rat ! Your words tugged at my heart. So very beautifully said, dear poet. Especially this - 'No need to read through teary eyes The words so firmly memorized Carved deep into my spirit’s well Where they still stir and ever dwell' A precious memory stirred. *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

I have a very special few but I have to admit I have let many of them go for one reason or another but I think most guys tend to do that anyway. (could be wrong) This however was beautiful and makes me wish that I still had some of those back. As always, your poetry opens up the mind and soul and reaches the depths of the reader. If you find yourself stranded in a storm ...then reach for my hand and we will play in the puddles together |
