Oscar Hammerstein wrote “We Kiss in a Shadow” for “The King and I” – This paltry effort I offer with apologies to him.

In moonlight’s shadows
Magnolia scented
Midst salty breezes
We meet in silence

The sun’s not ours
Our meetings fleeting
Too brief for passion
We kiss our greeting

Clasping arms
Bodies pressing
Soft lips touch
Hands caressing

Emotions mounting
Our words fail us
Moist eyes glowing
Our lives derail us

Will we ever
Meet in substance
Will fortune bless
This happenstance?

Gulf of miles, prior devotion
Cloud future visions
Where love might dance
Erase divisions

Yet borne of words
A budding friendship
Grew and blossomed
A perfect blendship

What seeded love here
The fates decreed
All we know now
Is increasing need

In moonlight’s shadows
Our kisses sublime
Faith in fate’s glory
A true meeting in time

< !signature-->

There are places inside our souls -
that have never been touched.
There are places inside our hearts -
that need to be loved this much.
~Janet Marie

Oh Sir, delete thy apologies...for this is a treasure that Oscar would deem worthy!...

Sun is VERY happy with this one!

Well done. A great read, flavorful and delicate to the senses.
I enjoyed it much.

Wilfred I just love Rogers and Hammerstein I think they were musical geniuses....I don't remember that particular song but I remember the the King an I ...it was Yule Brenner in the movie wasn't it? I've seen a lot of movies that came from broadway musicals and I have always loved their work...Oklahoma, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music...wonderful music....music with a heart. Today I listen to most everything..rock, blues, jazz, country, r&b and Pavarotti has even brought a tear to my eye by times even though I don't have a clue what he's singing about the mood and feeling is still there.....anyway, after all that... I love the first verse here it's beautiful as is the rest but it really is a great opening to a wonderful idea and poem...and The title is a real eye catcher...very lovely work!!
.........take care........ethome

Bill my man...why in the world would you apologize for writing perfection?  Have you been kissing the wrong shadows or something?  Even this cowboy could swoon to the words in this one; forget the moon.  NO, you better not, it lends such good light for the shadow kissing.  The only shadow kissing these lips now a days though seem to be my horse.   Really loved this one my friend.  Nice to see that some things never change, such as your golden quill that you pen with.

You know someone told me recently that "shadow" was an empty word. I say "bull" I loved this!!!!!

What is that you express in your eyes? It seems to me more than all the words I have read in my life.

This is a beautiful piece. You do Hammerstien justice, and that isn't an easy task, my friend! "The King and I" is one of my favorite musicals, and I really enjoyed this piece. Thanks for sharing.

Startime-

I remember hearing/seeing this song the first time - and recently reflecting on how my perception of it changed. I loved it then - and I love it now for different reasons - evident in my poem. Thank you.
