My wife is having an affair.
The evidence is everywhere.
Her face is rosy with delight.
A smile upturns her lips at night.

A special twinkle in her eye
I spot, as she goes passing by.
Her thoughts, a million miles away,
She barely hears a word I say.

Though I am crushed, I cannot claim
To not know wherein lies the blame.
There was a time, long years ago,
That I was quite the Romeo.

I brought her flowers every day.
I smiled at what she had to say.
I always tried to make her see
The happy man she let me be.

I made her laugh with silly quips
And took her on romantic trips
That made her squeal with delight.
I held her to me every night.

But, as the years passed frantically,
Romance came not so easily.
The mounting pressures of my life -
The work, the bills - no time for wife.

Bouquets delivered less and less
As did the times of tenderness;
My smile appeared less frequently
And changed the man that once was me.

Now I can see, she has another
Man to be a better lover.
Though I still play a vital part,
He is the one inside her heart.

She loves another man, and yet,
I sadly feel no regret.
Her other lover is, you see,
The husband that I used to be.

'Deer love, now this I like, a lot. Utterly utterly wonderful, I really do think this is superb, it really and truly is.
Absolutely fabulous
and yes as always I love it. Very very good piece.

I remember this, and I thought then, what a gift...

how you do this, I do not know, but I will always appreciate...

how you can let "it" be...

This is a very sad one, Michael. Yes I think I remember this one.  Far more sad would it be had the lady in the poem never had it at all.....

This is great.
Now all we need to do is see that every married couple sees this. Then maybe they can find out their mistakes before it's too late.

Balladeer~
I think this is sad.

I think Martie and I would agree -
NOT sending flowers is a big NO-NO !

But, you sure write a good tale.

Excellent Balladeer! You have summed up so much of the reality of a relationship but with such understanding and openess. These things happen but you have a way of turning it into verse that makes the impression stick....I love the truth of the last part.... great stuff!!

Deer,
I had a lover, now I see
the past comes back, is haunting me
I visit there as oft I can
looking for this lover man
he was so gentle, soft and kind
he loved my body and my mind
we used to talk for hours and hours
we used to share both wine and flowers
my husband doesn't know this man
he's working out his greater plan
and so I visit long and oft
to find the lover I have lost
I'd like this lover return'd to me
before I'm lost to fantasy

Write on, right wrong
Keth

My goodness you can write!
Unfortunately, Balladeer, this depresses me deeply.
How many loving words, kisses, hugs, dates, and intimate conversations have you had with this woman, only to watch the passion fade away many years down the road? I'm not a stranger of this topic, Balladeer. My parents have been passionately in love for fifteen years. FIFTEEN YEARS!!!! Thats a long ----ing time if you ask me!!! The longest I've ever held a relationship was nine months!
and now my father lives upstate in a condominium by himself...
should I just avoid falling in love in the first place?

Michael...I've missed so much on passions as of late, but this is one I'm certainly glad I didn't miss. You have a knack, my dear friend, of drawing in your readers through your work and packing a punch that stings long after the poem is finished. What an extradornary display of your talents as a poet this piece is   Loved it...incase you didn't realize that

I had to read this again, you know at first I thought it was the other lover who was from the files   and to think I turned down many filing jobs last year...
anyway I wanted to be sure and leave this number...
