A Cat Thing
Virginia Salter

Patience is a cat-thing,
surely, surely, Dear
for they await ‘most endlessly
for little sounds to hear.

Footsteps toward the door,
pitter pats of active feet,
handle spins, cat food tins
opening to meat.

Hours on end, yes, minutes, too
can float nonchalantly by,
they wait upon, heedlessly,
for a wealth they may supply.

Then when a tiny sound
or a thundering heel beat,
comes toward the door,
they’ve footpads, oh, so fleet!

As if taking well to wing,
they soar on through the door,
barely touching ground
hovering the floor.

As if matter-of-fact,
they begin a sweet repast,
followed by repose
to make the feeling last.

Yes, upon a well-stuffed chair,
they lick their fur just right,
ready to wile away the hours
from morning’s song to night.

I absolutely adore cats so that's what originally drew me into this. You wrote about them very creatively, kind of looking at something that you don't see too often noted. Me likes.

They seem to have wings at times, don't they? They are also masters at wiling time away! Very good, Virginia! You've captured the essence of the feline in this!

Thank you both for reading and commenting.  I do love to do cat poems and cats certainly do 'cat things.'

From one cat lover to another, this was great! I have three, and this aptly describes.
Great poem.
Happy new year.

Thank you, Catalinamoon and Temptress, for reading and for your encouraging words.

I have four cats, two that were my mom's and two that have been mine for 15 or 16 years.  Each has a distinctly different personality, yet each is distinctly 'cat!'

Virginia, has anyone told you about LJA's fetish toward anything feline...I just hope THIS one escapes his notice...after all he did promise to be very good and not do any kitty-kicking until after the first of the year...

by the way, I enjoyed it much!
