In the September of My Years (for more of Rupert Brooke : http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/7086/brookeidx.htm Rupert Brooke said "I have been so great a lover..." I thought on that For I too have known the pain, Wonder, surely astonishment But do I think to cheat death? Not a bit Yet still I envy him his words I've yet to see the equal of, "The inenarrable godhead of delight" Or from THE HILL: "You said 'Through glory and ecstasy we pass; ...When we are old, are old'" And as I peruse the well-worn pages Of all these words I love so well Knowing my phrases cannot even hide Below his brilliant shadow, I can look back and forward too Knowing I learned some from errors made Did my best no enemies to make Held out my hand to those in need Be they derelict or indigent Single mother or out of work Yes I've stumbled, fallen too Yet for my children I came through And know that love abides in them So if a love to carry me Forward to eternity Has not blessed me with lover’s bliss I move in comfort – without a kiss Tried with words - to share my vision Of what I’ve seen connubial Love sworn in youth and kept through senile Sparkles in rheumy eyes that beguile Such love exists and God’s not deaf So yet I may see "The inenarrable godhead of delight" And know Sir Rupert Brooke was right < !signature--> Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes. ~ Chinese Proverb ~ [This message has been edited by Wilfred Yeats (edited 12-29-2000).] |

I loved the feel of this one Bill. It says it all with we learn from our mistakes. Well done! *s* On the wings of words our spirits fly, and our souls are free. Donna Smith |

Well Bill whatever visions you have taken out of the shared spousal part of your life you have certainly shared here with such insight and wisdom. I really love how you've turned the summation qualities of this poem into such poetic beauty....very very well done sir!! |

Everyone - I must tell you - as I always must - how much I appreciate your responses. Please don't think me petty if I complain that no one seemed to notice the part Rupert Brooke played in my composition - Because I believe rightly or wrongly all most of you know of him is what you learned in HS English - most likely his sonnet "The Soldier" and nothing else. What I hope and pray is that I've stimulated an interest in his writing sufficient to make you want to read more. Either way - Thank you all so much for reading |

Wilfred, Just beautiful! "And yet for my children I came through". That's what makes a man a hero, and you have every reason to be proud of such a magnificent accomplishment of love. Elise |

Wilfred~ I was reminded immediately of 'The Wayfarers', one of Rupert Brooke's loveliest writes. Thanks for sharing this. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |
