Interesting thoughts in this old poem Unknown Author The Hell Bound Train ~~~ Having drunk so much he could drink no more Tom Gary lay down on the bar-room floor He fell asleep with a troubled brain and dreamed ... he rode on a Hell-bound train ~ The engine with blood was red and damp and brilliantly lit by a brimstone lamp An Imp for fuel was shoveling bones and the furnace rang with a thousand moans ~ The passengers made a motley crew there were Church members Athiest Gentile and Jew Richmen in broadcloth and beggars in rags handsome young ladies and withered old hags ~ While the train dashed on at a lightning pace the hot winds scorched their hands and face Wilder and wilder the country grew faster and faster the engine flew ~ Hotter and hotter the air became til the clothes were burned from each quivering frame Then in the distance there arose such a yell " Ha Ha" quoth the Devil we are nearing Hell ~ Then oh how the passengers shrieked with pain and begged the Devil to stop the train But he capered about and sang with glee and laughed and joked at their agony ~ My faithful friends you have done my work and the devil can never a pay-day shirk You have bullied the weak and robbed the poor and the starving brother turned from your door ~ You have laid up gold where canker rusts and you gave free vent to your fleshy lusts You have honour scorned and corruption sown and trampled the laws of justice down ~ You have drunk and stolen murdered and lied and scoffed and gloated in your hell-born pride You have paid full fare and I will carry you through for it is nothing but right you shold have your due ~ So Tom awoke with an agonized cry his clothes soaking wet and his hair standing high Then he prayed as he never had prayed before to be saved from drink and the Devils power And his vows and prayers were not in vain for he never more rides on a Hell-bound train ~~~ Life's a box of chocolates ... you never know what you're gonna get(RUN Forest ... RUN!) |
