Mariner's Net What secrets harbored upon olden sailing craft moored to weathered slips of St. Margaret’s Bay! Through treacherous inlets in predawn slow dance, ancestral honored trade practiced in remembrance. Silent sundown broken call of gulls, creak of masts, sodden sails furled in the absence of day. When the mist swirls in on late summer afternoons, fishermen, alerted, hasten boats home. Sailors listen intently to repeated weather warnings; gulls sheltering on slippery bows steal from today’s catch. The channel’s hold is full of treasures buried, time has swept tidal sands over stories never told. © 2000 CM Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 12-18-2000).] |
