The Faded Violet
~*Marge Tindal*~

In my hands I hold a gift of perfect measure.
A collection of Favorite Poems that I'll always treasure.
Bound in very old leather, embellished with gilding of gold,
given as a birthday gift to someone I do not know.

A young lady was given this very gift,
from a friend who took the time,
penciling upon the pages
an inscription that has lasted through the ages.

Miss Pauline Copping
on her 19th birthday ~
Presented by
Mamie Horisholder
June 20th, 1887

My eyes have caressed the masterpieces
contained within this precious gifting
and I felt the spirit of Pauline
lingering within the sifting.

On page two hundred forty seven
I found a treasured piece,
a tiny perfect pressed violet
in a small lacy handkerchief,
with this poem of anonymity.

The Faded Violet

You gave it me long years ago,
In the shadowy evening time -
While the clouds stole round the mountain side,
And the bells rang out a chime.
The blossoms listened at our feet -
The trees stooped from above.
You said, "This flower will say for me
All that my heart says - love."
'Tis long ago, but I have yet
That little faded violet.

And life was at its zenith then,
The world ne'er seemed so bright,
For the sweetest story ever told
I've kissed my violet blue,
And said, "E'en as I keep my flower,
So will my love be true."
Ah me -- I have it hidden yet -
That little faded violet.

We parted long, long months ago,
With not a sigh to tell
That once in far-off happy days,
We two had loved so well.
We parted with but few cold words,
We two who oft had said
Not all the world should come between.
Ah well - the love was dead -
The love was dead, but yet, but yet
I keep my faded violet.

So very tenderly I placed it
back where it has lain for years.
A little piece of Pauline's heart
in a hanky of her tears.

I hope that somehow Pauline Copping knows,
that the faded violet remains.
After one hundred thirteen years,
I treasure ~ her treasure.

Marge~

Thank you for sharing Pauline's treasure with us.  It was an honor to read.  Times change, yet some things remain untouched and unchanged.  Amazing.  Wonderful my friend.

Marge~ it amazes me how there are so many poems you have that touch me personally......you stir up memories that warm my heart, make me remember the words ' I love you little girl' and I see his hazel eyes, hear his Alabama drawl......and just remember the flower picked for me with a kiss of good-bye..........   -SEA

Marge, this is utterly fabulous, Oh this is so wonderful, it really is. Such a sweet tender story, and I can feel my eyes getting misty. But then I am the mushy queen. Do you know I spend more time with tears rolling down my face than anything. Tears of joy, tears of lost love, tears of found love. And I'm truly not a lachrymose sort, but I do thank you for being one of those who gave me back my tears. (Being in the hospital we do tend to grow harder shells over our hearts)
Okay it's true my heart isn't that hard but it could have been.
Love this one I really do
Take care

Take back the hope you gave,- I claim
Only a memory of the same

Dearest Marge, firstly you know I'd be pulled in to read a poem of violet (shades of purple are my favorite colors)...

And this poem you've shared has it's place in my heart and I thank you for this treasure...

Sweetie, you bless us with your jewels of poems that touch us in ways that words sometimes cannot relay...

This reminds me of all of the OLD books that I've either been given or have found at yard/garage sales...

what a treasure Marge! I love it! Isn't it so special? Thank you for sharing...

Yes, I feel the pull of you in much of what I write.
Thank you, my friend.

Marsha~
You may shed all the tears you want -
as I held this token of friendship,
written so long ago, I sure cried a few.

Dani~
This one lays lightly upon my heart,
for I felt the gentle hands of Pauline
holding the quill.

JanetMarie~
There is a spiritual enchantment that touches me
when I hold this book.

My what a treasure I've been given.

Elizabeth~
Yes, dear - it's true.
I was given the gift yesterday evening
and found the violet this morning.
The book was published by Belford, Clarke & Co. in 1886.
It is entitled - Favorite Poems

InterLoper~
Thank you for finding it special also.

WOW my friend.  You not only hold a very special gift in your hands when you hold that book but you most definitely hold a NEW muse to call upon.  This write of yours combined with the one that you share with us makes for the PERFECT afternoon read.  Such a beautiful and inspiring poem from you and the annonymous poet contained within your new found treasure.  You will have to share with us more inspirations from this book as I know that you will find many more to come.  This one goes in my library because it truely is ONE of your best.

Oh, Mark~
I think you're right -
there is at least one new muse, if not several,
hiding within this gift.
One has kissed me gently with the thoughts for this piece -
but another has peeked out shyly and has promised to return.

I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it.
I knew you would.
Thank you.
*Hugs*, sweet friend.

MotherEarth~
I'm so very pleased that you enjoyed it.
I wonder if perhaps a little piece I've tucked between
the pages of a book or two will live long after I'm gone.

I hope that someday someone will find me
and hold me with wonder, as I have held this faded violet.
