Could it Have Been the Grinch?
Virginia Salter

Strings of lights lie across littered carpet,
baubles strewn amid a tell-tale scene,
who could have been so cruel; who could have been so mean?

Tinsel sparkles its reminder of the joy at memory's awesome view,
just before we kissed good night and till morn we bid adieu.

Slumbering so peacefully for a moment we awoke
amid the night of dreams
a distant noise our slumber broke.

Silence again ensued as clock glowed half past two
we rolled over one more time, a gentle caress a kiss or two.

Arising to the morning, crawling from our slumber,
you went to brew the coffee
as I lumbered toward the nurs’ry.

She’s gone, she’s gone!!! She’s not in her bed!
What was that noise within the night? The one that rose my head!

Running in my wide awake,
to seek your thoughts and grip.
Running to escape this fear as tears fell on my lip.

Then I find the both of you one sleeping in a pile
of Christmas bears and candy canes
the other wearing tear-stained smile.

A silver ball held in her grip, little bum in the air
we could only feel our love for our little baby lying there.

Such a mess, such a sight, Christmas wall-to-wall
as you ran for the cam’ra, out the door and down the hall.

There’d be a chore, a great big chore
to set it all back right,
but this memory will have victory
and shed our Christmas light.

This one is still a bit rough...but it was inspired by overhearing a father whose toddler had apparently crawled out of bed in the night and 'destroyed' the Christmas tree.  I didn't get the particulars, clearly, so improvised.

My heart skipped a beat as I felt a little one had been taken.
Then you put things back to ticking just right.
I hope the father took the turn of events as a wonderful story he could tell on someones wedding day..

You read this exactly as I'd hoped.  When I give the father this poem, I must include your remark so he can consider such a delightful idea.  Thanks for reading and your comment!

Applause! What a wonderful tale you've woven Virginia ... you had me nervous, anxious, and then ... smiling at the perfect vision you painted. I just loved this!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Wonderfully written poem, put a large smile on my face... I would love to see the photos, a kodak moment for sure.

Beautiful poem! I was a bit scared at first, but very glad to see it turn out so joyous! I thought the loss of a child was about to come about.
Glad to see it was just a mischiefious child instead! I've got a cat that has done this very thing, all I could do was laugh and cry. My 2 year old hasn't done it yet, but I see it coming, I find ornaments all over the place one by one, it's just a matter of time - the whole tree will go!!!You really brought the right feeling to this! Wonderful!!!

Thank you all!  You are such lovely people.  I had thought that people weren't reading because of the title.  That perhaps they just couldn't bear one more Grinch tale, so that's why I made my plea...and the fact that the piece was getting buried pages down.  I'm so glad you liked this and I can hardly wait to show it to the father whose overheard remarks inspired this piece.
