Bare tree branches whisper in the wind as the cold air grasps at my mouth drawing out wisps of heated breath that passes up into the sky and seems to form a halo around a midwinter moon the cold starts to tingle at my feet as I walk across the frosty ground where grass crunches in uneven lumps startling a deer standing ghostlike only feet from my unobservant path The sky is winter clear the milky way seen in broad bands a clarity you don't have in the city where all I see is headlights and smell the leftovers of dirty people The breeze shiftily changes direction as the air takes on the smell of snow intimating the coming of another winter gale and I can't tell you if my eyes water from the cold or the beauty before me A real man kisses his children goodnight |

ah, winter. it may sound strange, but I love winter. this is a wonderful poem, and living in northern Minnesota, I can definetely relate to it. Even in the darkest night, someone will be there holding a candle for you. |

"a clarity you don't have in the city where all I see is headlights and smell the leftovers of dirty people" Great description of the city. and "and I can't tell you if my eyes water from the cold or the beauty before me" excellent ending! Enjoyed this. Thank you for posting. Sometimes we just take beauty for granted. |

As beautiful as this is, your quote is what I shall remember. What is that you express in your eyes? It seems to me more than all the words I have read in my life. Walt Whitman |
