                    Backyard Menagerie

                    breeze and I spoke today
                    as sprightly the gust played
                    pushing me along, puffing
                    southern breezes,  northerly born,
bringing hint, before cold, the warm

                    whispering winter’s coming

                    robins packing full the backyard
                    knowing we grow nourishment
                    just for them, our guards
                    as little soldiers they stand
                    chirping, singing hungry demand

                    knowing winter’s coming

pet rabbits of nature, eyeing warily
the lay of the land as they see
the spread of grain and seed
and even chase brown squirrels away
                    leaving nothing left to weed

                    waiting for winter's coming

                    a woodpecker, striped herringbone-like
in darkest black, gray and white
                    red blazoning on it’s neck
                    adopted us rather circumspect
and treats its whereabouts with respect

                    watching for the winter coming

                    cottonwood readying to let go
                    all of summer’s greenery
leafing flutters have turned to a
                    whiskery sound of scenery
in the Kansas winds that blow

                    eager for winter’s coming

the breeze and I spoke today
                    robins packing full the backyard
                    a woodpecker, striped herringbone-gray
‘neath cottonwood readying to let go
soon to be blanketed in white, it’s so

                    winter’s coming
