LOVING MISERY "And would you bear your soul for me?" I heard the whisper say. As silence fell all around me, I whispered too, "o.k." "And would you give your life, need be, Lo, suffer yourself ill?" With only Darkness there to see, I simply said, "I will". "And would you save your heart for me, And never know remorse?" "Know by all the powers that be, I will, my love, of course." "Will temperance be our ball and chain? Will Time be our slow death?" "Has Time not now ended all pain? Is love not our life's breath?" I felt her breath upon my skin, At that, I closed my eyes. "But won't our love be counted sin? Our truths be counted lies?" "Know my love by all virtue ‘Tis not by veil or band, But only our merits of true By which our love must stand." At this she said, "Open your eyes," And there in streaming light, Aglow as if an angel's prize, Her eyes lit up the night. She looked on me and spoke no more, But took me by the hand. I woke and all was as before, Silent and dark and damned! "And would you not return as much?" I cried in shameless plea. But only felt the empty touch Of loving Misery. "Lo, angel of my darkest night, Lo, demon of my day, I call to you in selfless plight, I know no other way. If by the hand that feeds my heart, Or bleeds my starving soul, Should it be less that I impart Then that which makes me whole." But, oh, no answers ever come To meet need such as this. All emotion grows dull and numb In longing for her kiss. Echoes of laughter find their mark Upon these parched, dry lips, But never can I peel the Dark With lifeless fingertips? As shadows grope these sacred halls Which bind me to her stead, I hear my voice return my calls And wonder if I'm dead. Or by what channel I've landed This suffering of trust. That all in life must be branded By Glitter or by Dust. The kiss of Death upheld in Life, I yet honor my vow, But question with endearing strife Not only why? - But how? "But only felt the empty touch of loving Misery....." Michael.....these words that you have penned have such a depth to them....there's such a lonliness within them. A beautiful work this is.... Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Michael, This is raw emotion personified in my opinion. I just couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. Great writing! Nice to see you here again. Lone Wolf Poetry should surprise by fine excess...it should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance. -J.Keats |

i read this 3x, michael... and still... i'm sorry... don't get the ending... it seems it's such a dynamically special and poignant piece about love... and then it twists to something vacant.. something disturbing.. and i feel at a loss... i need to read it another few times, i guess sometimes poetry falls on ears of those who aren't ready to hear the meaning, i guess... the stanza where the title phrase "loving misery" was used was the exact stanza where i got lost well, it's been a long 10 months so i'll attribute my confusion to being lost in my own vision and adjustment......i really loved the beginning up until that stanza where i got lost but that says a lot, too, metaphorically, about me... if you followed these comments, good. if not, oh well... just know i hope you are well and that your words flow, despite my inability to comprehend them... it COULD BE that the phrase "loving misery" is something i don't want to understand at the moment.... or ever... i'd rather love love (hug) be well. ~doreen and thanks for the read [This message has been edited by doreen peri (edited 10-01-2000).] |
