~*NOTHING'S NEW*~ I called you this morning, my best friend whom I had not seen or spoken to for so long, although we had lost touch, time and place never stole you away from my memories and daily thoughts, I picked up the phone with an almost childlike excitement giddy at the thought of hearing the reassuring voice of my best friend, I dialed your number almost in a trance, "long distance charges apply" the operator in her mechanical coldness recited, I preceeded with the call your friendship was priceless, you were there for me all those years, you supported and encouraged me, you gave me happiness and friendship, you were like my sister and my kindred spirit, endless hours we would laugh and talk about anything and everything and we would sit with each other for days even when we had nothing to say, you were the most loyal friend I ever knew and I cherished you and worked hard to keep our bond alive, the dialtone seemed like an eternal gateway just to reach out to you, many rings echoed in my ear, patiently I waited for a connection as my cheek felt a bittersweet tear, the phone was answered abruptly, as always you were on the go, your voice I recognized in an instant that old familiar calmness to the soul, "Hi, it's me, I just wanted to say hello," I asked how you were doing with an enthusiasm unrivaled, and even if you didn't answer back, it was good to hear your voice for a moment, you told me of your new life for quite some time, you had changed and accomplished much, met a new love and new friends, as I listened content to my best friend never to interrupt, and then in your mechanical coldness you asked me what was new with me, I wanted to tell you of all the heartaches and joys that had touched my life that year, of my plans and the loves lost, and how much I had missed my friend, that life just wasn't the same without you, I wanted to read you the poem that I had written to honour you, and I wanted to question why you had forgotten all those special holidays when I rememered them when I sent myself through the mail to you, but, I knew that you just didn't care anymore, that you had moved on...without me, so instead I replied back in defeat "oh, not much, nothing's new" and without a second's pause you quickly chimed "sorry, but I have to go, it was nice to hear from you," it was time for me to accept reality, to face the painful hard truth that distance doesn't always make the heart grow fonder, but rather forces it to forget, and I listened to the stale sound of the dialtone *By Melissa Honeybee* The beauty of poetry gives my soul wings to fly free within dreams |

Melissa - this poem is really a downer - yep, it's that good. It touched me, even if it touched me in the wrong places. If it's a true story, then I'm sorry you were hurt, but I'm happy you are rid of her. What kind of a friend puts a time limit on a friendship? Great writing, Melissa. |

Melissa, This poem definately sounds familar. I used to have a very close friend.. and we lost touch.. she got married and had a family.. and I was left behind. The sad thing is she is only about 15 min away from me. People grow, change and expand.. It sad we can't always manage to do that together. I love the poem And I am also glad that you have decided to come back. ~hugs~ ~~Tara aka rp25 :o) |

I am glad you liked my poem. It was because of depression that I started writing. Don't worry, though, I am a very content person now. Your poem really touched me. I got little shivers all over my body. It was like a page out of my life, except mine has a happier ending. But, you know what they say "It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." That includes best friends too. Hang in there. I will look forward to seeing more of your work. Melissa~ this brought tears to my eyes, this is exactly why I'm afraid to pick up the phone and call my best friend. I DON'T want to hear that he doesn't care. It would kill me. This poem is a gem, it's excellent. -SEA Live,Love,Laugh :) ~SueB |

Melissa, all I can say is that if your friend could forget that easily then they were never a friend at all. Excellent piece of writing and yes it did sadden me to know that one with a heart of gold such as yourself would have to go through this. Life's lessons never are easy it seems. |

Thank you everyone for the encouraging replies, and sadly yes, this was written about my "best friend" Roberta whom I still love, but no longer can hold onto the closeness we once had. Take care, Melissa Honeybee The beauty of poetry gives my soul wings to fly free within dreams |

Melissa~ Oh, sweetie ! Friendship is about giving ... and giving and giving. If we're lucky enough to get something back from it ... we're lucky indeed ! It was wonderful of you to think of your friend and to call her - Someday, she may need to hear your voice as badly as you needed to hear hers ... she'll ring you and you'll be as sweet a sound as she'll ever want to hear. And when she says, "What's new with you ?" .... tell her ! Love ya' gal ! ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |
