Over the river and through the woods

If there is love,
Let us strip it open and suck the marrow.
If there is still an attempt at kindness,
Let us huddle and survive.
I can burn his memoirs to warm your hands,
I can humor isolation on my own time,
And pay attention.
If you would promise the flight, the feeling of
absolution, if you would promise
passion and adoration.
I need to feel more than devotion.
I am sick of hiding in the hush 3 am to cry over
something I can never resolve.
And this endless generosity, this immeasurable kindness…
I can't take up any more of your time, Darling.
Precious child, I know what you're worth.
I am sick of forgetting you in my overdue grief.
Your long frustration over equality… needing to amaze me,
wanting to blind me with your intelligence
(to overawe the relic of his brilliance).
I am sick of the reality that you never will.
Would you dazzle me? Would you catch my breath and make me
stammer? Would you drop your hands over me, speak in tones to ease
the dead, remark on possibilities that leave me sleepless four nights after
(wide and shuffling, left in the wondering).
Somehow shift this existence so I may
Jump when you speak,
Pray when you breathe,
Instead dying of every time I hear his name?
