The Flight of the Snow Goose Frost is on the morning blade Wind in gusty swirl Ruffled feathers rising up As black tipped wings unfurl From north slope of Alaska In crisp of morning light The white wings tipped in black spears Ascend in massive flight To heaven’s height they all arise And fly at tailwind’s pace Following a changing course When wind is in their face They follow in the flyway That they have known before A head wind puts them in reverse A tail wind makes them soar Day and night the flight goes on Through winds both fair and harsh The geese then flutter down to fuel Upon a prairie marsh The way is set, the yearly trek The snow goose knows not why But flies to winter’s feeding place Within God’s watchful eye Two thousand miles the wild fowl soars To reach the destined shore Flapping down to food-rich pond Then up to heaven’s door A sputtering rush off rippled pond In awesome mass they rise And head down to the Texas coast With hunger in their eyes The winter passes instantly It’s time to turn around The black and white will rise again To summer’s nesting ground How marvelous the will and might Of feathered creatures' wondrous flight [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (edited 10-31-2000).] |

Oh how marvelous the pennings of one with the heart of all mother nature resting inside of her. You amaze me my friend with each and every post you put up. Did I tell you that you are the only poet that I have marked for ALL submissions of yours to go into my library now? I don't want to miss any of them. Your beautiful imagery and the perfect flow and cadence of your works so needs to be in a book of their own. You need to work on that and I want an autographed copy please. ![]() |

To grab my attention with a descriptive piece is quite a feat. You've done an outstanding job displaying the regal presence of this wonderful bird. TLS |

Elizabeth! This was one of your most beautiful ever. I love autumn, so this poem is high on my list...just gorgeous. I could see the picture unfolding before me as I read. It reminded me of another of my favorites, "Something Told the Wild Geese." Awesome work here! Elizabeth You cling to your ways and leave mine to me. Suum cuique. ~Elizabeth |

You've captured natures beauty and my imagination. i could feel the wind as I soared with them, As usual, beautifully done. Tossing words like wishful coins into the deep well of an open heart. R. fox |

Your verses flow so well. When I look up and see the geese this year in Texas I'll be sure to remember this poem. Beautiful! Melton |

the one thing I miss about being in this new retirement- is not driving the migratory path of these marvelous beasts - seeing their ragged vee's - the slow drive along the Cooper river park where they congregate, their raucous quacking as they findtheir course in low flight, and last but not least- the absolutely touching way they demonstrate what it means to be 'mated for life'. This one to my treasure box. |

Bill, you warmed my heart with your response. I enjoyed reading it about thegeese along the Cooper River. The snow geese fly along that way on their trek between Iceland and Greenland and the Carlinas. Thank you so much. Marcy, So glad you liked this poem and thank you for the comments Liz |
