For the Love of the Child Our eyes are weary, our eyes are bleary, The pay, it's not so great; But we do it all for the love of the child And pray it's not too late. Yes we're here to teach them To add and read and write, But we can't control what happens When they go home at night. Some come with so many burdens, Their young lives filled with pain, And seeing a frown turn into a smile Is like a rainbow after the rain. We point them to the right path, But the choice is theirs alone, And choices made while still a child Affect us when we're grown. If we can light a single candle And see that flame begin to glow, That flame could touch so many lives In ways we may never know. We pray we make a difference As we care and love and teach, For we know the future's in the hands Of the children we must reach. Sometimes we're sad, and often glad, The rewards they can be great: But we do it all for the love of the child, And pray it's not too late. |

... Too bad we can't save them all, isn't it? These words are soooooo true... I think they belong on every teacher's desk blotter... |

Nan - Saving them all would be wonderful, knowing for sure I had saved just one would be a reward. Amy - I think you probably see a lot more than I of "what happens when they go home at night." Thank you for the work I know you do to alleviate their pain. Thank you for your kind words. ddgoose - Wow, what a compliment. Thank you. |

PoetsSister~ As the mother of two educators, I thank you and applaud the efforts of all engaged in the impacting of children's lives. My daughter teaches special needs children. These are children who are emotionally challenged. The horrors they go home to is mind-boggling. One of my sons teaches sixth grade students. Both have awesome responsibilities and deserve the praise, as do all who teach. I mentor two groups of kids and the joy and fulfillment is so rewarding. Thank you for this write. I've sent it to both of my children who teach for them to share. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

What a perfect poem! I work at a private boarding school for troubled/defiant teens. A lot of our students have histories of drug/alcohol abuse or are sexual abuse survivors. I know well the feelings you speak of. I'm not a teacher and I don't teach my students the 3 R's. However, I do teach my girls how to love and respect themselves and let go of the past and their mistakes. I've sent this poem as a greeting card to all the teachers I know. I'm sure they'll love it as much as I did. Thank you for sharing! [This message has been edited by Tara Simms (edited 10-22-2000).] |

Marge - Much praise goes not only to your children who give so much of themselves as educators, but also to the mother who raised them to care enough to do it. Thank you for sharing your family with me and my poem with them. Tara - The lessons you are teaching are every bit as important as the three R's. Continue the good work you are doing and thank you for your kind words. |

Sister...I'm sure you've changed the lives of more than one child, knowing you, I can't think that that hasn't happened. Oh, wonderful poem by the way. |

You can count on the fact that as a teacher you will have an affect on many children as they pass through your life. This was a beautifully written tribute to all those that really put their heart into it and for me, my memory was my fourth grade teacher. Mrs. Shipes. Now for me to remember her when I am now 42 and still hold her memory dear, I would say she had an affect on me. That is one of the things that she never heard. In any case and to stop rambling I would just like to say, You may never hear the words or even know of it but there will be those that hold you dear forever. |

Yes..yes..Wonderful work. This shows the work of an educator well. I have a high respect of for teachers of any kind or subject. Their job is often difficult with the conflicts of children's home life too. *Jenn* |

Poet's Sister- oh my...big hugs to you. thank you so much for this. i have spent most of the past 20 years working with children of all ages in many different capacities...it is often a thankless job, but making a difference in the life of even one child makes it all worth while. i will definitely be sharing this with my friends who have devoted their lives to teaching... ((((hugs)))) -vicky "...until you have read the verse on his heart, you have not truely met the poet." -vlraynes |
