*This piece began as a Halloween poem, but grew into ... well ... "this". I hope it goes without saying, that this is not based on personal experience, it just took it's own path based on the comparisons I seemed to be drawing. . Creature of the Night Above the slight October breeze, a voice rose through the night, She heard it calling out her name, it filled her soul with fright; With drunken eyes, she woke from sleep, disoriented there, And struggled to awake her mind ... in to the dark she stared. Another noise, a whispered voice, she turned her head to strain, Intently listening for the sounds, repeated once again; With grated resonance it hummed, a mantra to her soul, A force there in totality, that beckoned her to go. Without a will, she rose to elbow, from the sheets, slid she, While placing feet upon the ground, propelled unwittingly; She reached toward the nightstand, for the comfort that she knew, And grasped the bottle, gave a pull, as further, she withdrew. Delusions rose from liquid, as she drank her fill that night, Her tortured soul, was fed by this ... her creature of the night; Her mind was fogged, and screaming now, it begged her try to cease, But hypnotized, she carried on, her pace seemed to increase. She stumbled to the window, grasped the edge, and opened wide, The bottle fell from trembling hands, she could not quell the tide; With frightened eyes she peered into the blackness of the night, And tried to focus on the voice that filled her soul with fright. Unnerved and trembling, there she stood, as shapes began to form, Beyond confines of sanity, her terror now reborn; With knuckles white and tightened grip, she leaned a little more, Into the blackness of the night, still terrified ... unsure. She heard a gentle fluttering, and gave a nervous sigh, Illusions sharply teased her through intoxicated eyes; But suddenly ... out from the depths, below her window sill, A darkened vision there arose ... her taker of freewill. She watched as if a movie played in front of this, her eyes, As slowly there, it levitated, heedless of her cries; It's eyes were darkened pools of crimson, peering through her soul, It's skin, like glowing embers as the whitest hot of coal. The stench of breath upon her skin, not five inches away, Left wanting to recoil in protest, yet she could not stray; Her gaze held sickly mesmerized, it whispered out her name, As there it hovered, flowing cape, in legendary fame. With liquid motion, in a flash, it slipped into her room, And guided her to ease her back, to meet her pending doom; She struggled then, beneath caress, as hands brushed lightly there, Her neck exposed the jugular, as claws stroked back her hair. In weak attempt, she gave a cry, as sharply there she felt, The break of skin, the tear of flesh, in protest there, she knelt; Her struggles ceased, she settled limp, no longer would she flee, What once was agony and terror, turned to ecstasy. She sank into a darkened place, reality no more, In witness of her old companion, swallowing her whole; It drained her of her essence, as it drank to it's delight, It turned the tables, all consuming, creature of the night. In days that passed, she withered slowly, shrank from dawning sun, Grew weaker with the passing hours ... a hunger had begun; It started as a gnawing ache, deep in the pit of her, And grew into a thirst she could not fathom, nor endure. Her skin a ghostly white, and eyes that rimmed with crimson red, She hovered 'neath her mind in torture for this life of dread; A shell of what she used to be, she cowered and she cried, Amongst the shadows, now her only refuge there to hide. Addiction wrought, with trembling hands, she cursed this hellish plight, As there she drank, in tandem with her creature of the night. /Kit McCallum . First Liz-thank you for bumping as I had missed this due to my shortened time available here. Kit, I have always enjoyed your writing and well what can I say about this other than "I BOW TO YOU IN HUMBLENESS". This piece is so awesome and so unlike you in so many ways but then it "IS" like you in the fact that you have stretched the boundaries of growth and that is SOOOOOOOO you. Excellent piece and in my library it will go. |

~Butterflies: Thanks so much for the wonderful response Butterflies! I guess I've been a little dark a few times, but this one was a little odd nonetheless, glad you enjoyed! ~Liz: You are so kind Liz ... thank you soooo much for all these lovely words, they mean a great deal to me, thank you! ~Denise: Aahhhh, the flow, the flow, thanks Denise!!! I just love it when the rhythm works, but it's funny because I could read it one way, and someone else another, so sometimes it's hard to tell if it's working. Thanks so much! ~Liz: ~Mark: No humbling allowed Mark, LOL ... with all the wonderful writers around here, including yourself, it is "I" who am humbled, and so grateful to be in everyone's company. I love this place! ~Mark: LOL! Much appreciation to all, /Kit |
