Grandma speaks of the hills How beautiful they must have been! But those West Virginia Hills Will never be seen again She told me of how she sat Upon her window sill And looked out at them as she wrote I wish they were here still She said the green hills Were a beautiful sight As they rolled on until they touched the sky Now the earth looks a fright! The hills, they are no more Coal companies have mined them away Now Grandma looks out and sees nothing She didn't want to live to see this day The hills that were green in summer And red and gold in fall And snowy white in the winter Are now only a memory to recall The hills that protected us From tornadoes and storms Are no longer stanging They don't exist anymore We are now exposed To whatever comes along The cardnal, our state bird No longer sings it's song Now you look out the window And all you see is sky Coming down to touch the dead earth It always makes Grandma cry She said "I'm so sorry, my girl That we put our jobs before the hills If we had our heads on straight The hills would be here still I wish that I could go back in time And tell how much can be lost When you mess with mother earth It comes at no small cost" Oh, I wish I could see the hills... "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Oscar Wilde |

"She said "I'm so sorry, my girl That we put our jobs before the hills If we had our heads on straight The hills would be here still" This is a wonderful verse "We put our jobs before the hills", to think your Grandmother said that and we are still doing it today. The cardinal is one of my favorite birds. I hope he never goes away You did a great job and met the challenge beautifully Love Liz |

LoveBug - this one really spoke to my heart! As a nature-lover, it's really sad to see what's happening to our world... If it isn't our jobs that are being put before the hills, it's housing developments. Are you familiar with John Denver's song, "Rocky Mountain High?" "Now, his heart is full of wonder, But his mind still knows some fear Of a simple thing, he cannot comprehend: Why they try to tear the mountains down, To bring in a couple more. More people - more scars upon the land." Thank you for sharing this beautiful message! Troy Beautiful, Thought-Provoking Poetry http://www.h-systems.net/p1.htm |

HAPPY EARTH DAY LOVEBUG! BTTT! Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders And it makes me want to touch you there. And the light in your eyes makes me feel Like there's something much better out there Something kind... And I know someday I might be looking around Trying to find some purpose Well purpose it can't be that hard to find As long as I've got the wind... The wind and your love to carry me. vertical horizon |

LoveBug, Very good piece! I like the feeling I get from reading this. It does make you think and wonder just how much of the things we enjoy today will be long gone before the next generations ever have a chance to enjoy them. Wonderful writing. And great subject on Earth Day! ~you reached inside, you touched my heart, and I am all the better for it~ Terry A. Woodson, Jr. |
