EARTH DAY CHALLENGE The Little Things that We can Do (a slight re-write) Mother earth come to me many time we fail thee I can't speak for the majority as I am only one - but I can teach what I know for those that need to be reached. I separate my cans, paper and bottles, too I try not to buy plastic from people who do Sometimes, I am tired, and wonder what does it matter. I am only one person, but I can raise such a clatter I drive as little as necessary and never buy colored toilet paper and never buy napkins or paper towels Though my family really lets out howls Straws I leave for the hospital and the very ill plastic and cardboard - need not be wasted for the convenience of mankind our dump is filled Baby diapers, I had a plenty washed and dryed outside and not for the lack of money My heat is off - most the year through my dryer and my dishwasher, too My hands are getting worn and I see other women my age with hands of beauty and I sigh -- but for vanity - why should I care? At weddings, never throw rice, birds eat it and as it swells inside their tummies the tummies burst and that is not nice. When you feed the birds in the glorious summer Always must remember to feed them the whole year through adding oil so they won't freeze just little things that we must remember to do Ask whom you pray to grant you the strength to live this life style, even if it is for a little while When you kill a plant remember to plant again to replenish for whatever you need Yes, I know I should wipe with leaves, but if I did that I would have to face the family Squander as little as you can as the human race We were not born perfect and I know it is very hard to do - when convenience stares us in the face Each day try to do one little thing that helps It may not seem much, but what if everyone changed one earth killing habit - to save a tree, the air, a rare plant -- eat less flesh -- start a small vegetable garden - don't use dyed paper - buy recycled things -- if you don't want to turn your cans into a recycle bin - hang them on your back fence for the poor who will be grateful for them Recycle your newspapers - children come and do newspaper drives. And, use your great imagination to try to use every disposable thing that you somehow recieve and use it twice. If you have a piece of land -- plant a tree - and watch it grow - trees should live longer than humans you know. In your back yard dig a hole and start a compost pile where potatoes grow --) Gardening is a funny thing - oh, no not again, but when your hands are in the dirt - a peace like no other will fill your heart. Waste not, want not - is an old adage. Change one thing. One little thing in your lifestyle and when you are comforatable with that - change another earth killing habit. I am not perfect and find that I fail thee many times, mother earth. And, for that I am very sorry. Earth to Earth and ashes to ashes I cry -- -I try my hardest and will try harder, but sometimes - I wonder, Mother Earth, if I am the only one, am I? Challenge for Earth day Teresa King |

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by the immenseness if this global illness..but as you show examples here -- there things we can all do that if done in large numbers will make a significant difference. SUPER JOB!! jm Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders And it makes me want to touch you there. And the light in your eyes makes me feel Like there's something much better out there Something kind... And I know someday I might be looking around Trying to find some purpose Well purpose it can't be that hard to find As long as I've got the wind... The wind and your love to carry me. vertical horizon |
