he's off again to a far away land my patriotic man the nights get lonely when he's away waiting for the day he will return the knock on the door three stars on his collar I turn away It can't be true he promised a safe return he said it was a worthy cause I still wonder what he was fighting for "To serve our country", he told me when we were young "secure a future for you and my sons." Now I'm alone my country stole him from us a war in a foreign land now he returns to the dust I scream out his name in the night noone around to hear just my babies alone in their beds how I hold them so dear well he's safe now no more wars to fight how i wish he was here to hold me tenderly yet tight I know he is looking down on us sprinkling his angels dust from the heavens he protects the wars he's fought still have not ended his worthy cause is not amended my hero has gone away let me go with him now I pray....... |

this was very interesting. i've never read a poem like this one. very deceiving title =) i liked it. it was sad and mournful without being extremely heavy. i dig it. We all got somethin' we need to atone for. |

Thank you Ethan...it isn't really true to my life but I was inspired by the many stories I have heard of loves lost due to combat, families left behind....Thank you I am glad you liked it. |

sarahC, this is really wonderful writing. So sad when a soldier dies. How is any country served when a young man dies?? I could go on and on about this but here is not the place. Your poem was really nice! Lots of sensitivity and expression. dh A life isn't significant except for its impact on other lives. |
