Out beyond far side of town,
...at edge of mapled grove,
Amid the briars and the brambles,
...lays hidden treasure trove.

Goldenrod and primrose wild,
...rim bluestemmed grassy knoll,
Beneath cool shade of maples tall,
...a spot of heaven stole.

How I found this peaceful glen,
...I really do not know,
Was as if led, by unseen hand,
...on path of long ago.

Dead fallen log provides a throne,
...in midst of nature's grace,
As squirrels scamper through the limbs,
...of canopy's embrace.

Once was called Quivira's land,
...t'wixt Kansa and the Sioux,
Along the banks of Cowskin Creek,
...Comanche counted coup.

A cooling wind sings songs of old,
...where once a campfire shone,
Where warriors danced and coyotes howled,
...and now man sits alone.

Mike, you have painted me into this lovely place with your vivid description...all we need is a river full of trout.  This is beautiful writing, my friend.

WOW!
Breath taking piece.
What a view you've seen here, and wrote in a way
that could be seen by others as well.
Great piece Mike

Haunting words of remembrance sir, yet so very vivid and beautiful.  You paint fabulous history.  I loved your dialect too, btw.  Must be a Kansas thing...

I love this! Reminds me that when I go somewhere, I never buy a souvenir. I take a small rock from the place. You never know who walked on that rock in years past.

The history of this particular place must be the force that draws you to it.  Lovely poem, beautiful settings.
