Poetic Nightmare

A poem just pops into my head
It really blows my mind
I conjure up exquisite thoughts
That leave the others blind

These notions only come to me
Beyond the midnight hour
That’s when my muse of poetry
Exudes her mighty power

I get this real dynamic thought
That pounds my brain all night
I toss and turn, and let it burn
Into the morning light

It gathers up momentum
As it tumbles round and round
And forms into a solid ball
Of rhythm, thought and sound

The perfect verse, the perfect rhyme
The perfect charming grace
This poem’s sheer perfection
Is so perfectly in place

It’s been ingrained into my brain
I’m  repetition worn
But that’s the price of glory
When a masterpiece is born

But let me sleep just one more hour
The poem’s etched in my head
When I awake I start to shake
And jump right out of bed

I better sprint down to the screen
And write this baby down
I’ll never write one quite like this
The jewel upon my crown

So many verses in my head
Now how should I begin
I think I’ll write the last one first
Beginning at the end

But first jot down that middle thought
Into the hard drive, please
That one that’s going to rock the world
And bring it to its knees

Now let me see, how did it go
How did I word that phrase
It really was quite brilliant
But my mind is in a daze

Now let’s go back and quick backtrack
This is a sorry plight
To reconstruct the spendid thoughts
That taunted me all night

I’m getting just a little shook
That I can not recall
The words, the thought, the meaning
Or the subject of it all

You can’t catch fish upon a wish
Quick grab them from the hook
Your muse won’t wait and compensate
The snoozing time you took

My muse is down, she just left town
The bait can’t last all day
I can’t believe I blinked and
Let the big one get away!

Very cute, and reminiscent of PdV's "Poet's Prayer"!

Yep, I know just what you mean.  One time I actually got up and wrote down some brialliance and then went back to bed...alas when I awoke, gibberish was what I'd said.

You haven't lost you muse Liz...it's still bright eyed and bushy tailed...loved this poem!

That was the epitemy(sp) of what happens to me all the time!  I get this really awesome idea and then it leaves me the next second!
A very good poem, and also a poem that has a message.

When you've got an idea, write it down!!!

I also have a question:

What exactly is a muse?  I always hear statments like, "Oh, this guy is invoking a muse!"..   What the heck does that mean?  It almost sounds like the poet's summoning a monster or magical being or something...

Liz, it is very strange to keep jumping out of bed to write down thoughts before they get away. You should do what us normal people do....keep a tape recorder next to the bed and, when a thought or line comes to you, hit the button and record it! Saves all that jumping up and down, yanno???

It is amazing what we come up with, and it seems perfect but trying to put the words to paper is harder than it seems. All part of the challenge. wonderful poem one we can relate to.

LOL! Your ending was cute and frustrating at the same time.   I agree with Balladeer about the recorder.
Loved it.

LOL now this I can relate to, except my poem was written and submitted to Passions and I still kept trying to rewrite in my mind at the same time I was worrying about my business and other things LOL. I slept very little last night, due in a large part to my poetry!

Elizabeth, my friend~
This is just so absolutely refreshing !
Can't believe one ever got away from you.
You're a natural-born fisherman !

My philosophy -

When a poetic thought escapes me,
it wasn't meant to be mine.
It stopped to tickle my fancy
and scurried to another mind.

Sort of like trying on slippers,
from rack to rack I flit ...
Along comes Cinderella
and finds the perfect fit !

Love you ~
