This lengthy poem deserves an explaination. Every summer, I have the honor of being in a wonderful outdoor theater called "The Aracoma Story", a play about a true drama that took place in the very spot in which we perform. Our cast always grows very close, and I was inspired to write this poem, because that time is coming again! The Indian’s fire Goes up in a flash Bringing back to life A far-gone past Behind the great stage We all listen with awe As the great Princess speaks Against the white man’s fall We know what is real And what is just fake We know that our "Indians" Are just wearing paint We know that "Aracoma" Isn’t our friend’s real name But it all feels alive It’s real, just the same And after the play Is over and done We wash off the paint And have lots of fun We stay out all night... Well, as long as we dare Practice is early And our director is there! And then the next night We prepare for the stage Ah, we were all friends Despite of our age The oldest was 60 The youngest was five But all of us had The time of our lives Every night for two weeks In the hot August sun We were always there Having so much fun But when we were onstage There was no goofing off As we performed this drama There was no showing off But time marched on As time always does And these two weeks Soon became as dust The last night is the best For the audience there But behind the acting It’s more than we can bear Saying sad goodbyes And cursing our fate We drive off, one last time To our corners of the state Whenever I see a fire Go up in a flash It brings back to life A far-gone past But those days are coming They will soon be here And I’ll see those soon Who I hold so dear Year after year, we do this play And we still come together, all the same And again, we see... The Indian’s fire Goes up in a flash Bringing back to life A far-gone past "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Oscar Wilde |

LoveBug~ Your poem is lovely and I've seen the play ... it is outstanding. I will be honored just knowing you are taking part in this. You've so much talent and are to be applauded for all you do. I applaud you, my dear. ~*Marge*~ This is the tale of the Indian princess Aracoma and her ill-fated love for the British soldier captured by her father in the West Virginia hills near their home in 1780. ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |
